To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID F. BRUBAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glen Campbell, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Miners Cap, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to lamps for use by miners, drivers, motormen and others employed under ground.

It has been found, that lamps such as commonly employed, will not remain upon the caps of the wearers when they strike overhanging timbers or other obstructions and are often thrown to the ground and extinguished, thus leaving the user in darkness.

One of the objects of the present invention is to provide means whereby a lamp will be held securely to the cap under the conditions stated, the holding means being simple and durable and necessitating no changes in the construction of the lamp proper.

A further objectiis to provide improved means for connecting the lamp to the crown of the cap, said means including guides for directing the lamp into proper position relative to one of the attaching elements.

With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

In said drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cap with the present improvements combined therewith. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through a portion of the cap and the parts attached thereto, the lamp being shown in elevation. Fig. 3 is a section on line AB Fig. 2.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference C designates a cap having a vizor D. A supporting element designated. generally at l is arranged upon the front portion of the cap and consists of a backing strip 2 of sheet metal and a front strip 3 also of sheet metal, the two strips being of the same length and Specification of Letters Patent.

being held together by means of the longitudinal edge portions of the plate 2 which are folded onto the plate 1 so as to form retaining flanges 4, as shown particularly 1n Fig. 1. The supporting element has its upper portion bent back substantially at a right angle and riveted or otherwise secured upon the front portion of the crown of the cap C, this rearwardly extending portion being indicated at 5. The lower portion of the supporting element is bent forwardly as indicated at 6 and is riveted or otherwise secured upon the vizor D.

A guide plate 7 is secured at its sides upon the rearwardly extending portion 5 and is formed with parallel upstanding beads 8 forming a channel 9 therebetween, there being an opening 10 in the bottom of the channel adjacent the front end thereof.

A spring clip 11 is fastened, at its center, to the supporting element 1 at a point between the bent portions 5 and 6 and the arms of the clip converge forwardly and merge into outwardly rolled terminals 1:2. This clip is of such size as to embrace and firmly clamp upon the body 13 of a torch lamp such as commonly employed, said body having a hooked stem 14 upon the rear portion thereof. Said stem has its pointed terminal extending downwardly and adapted to be seated within the opening 10. Said terminal is also adapted to extend into openings 15 formed within the strips 2 and 3 and registering with the opening 10. The opening 15 formed in the strip 2 is smaller than the other opening 15 so that, when the terminal of the stem is inserted into the openings, the pointed end of the stem will engage the walls of the lower opening 15 and thus be supported so as to prevent the pointed end from sticking through the crown of the cap and possibly injuring the wearer. A reinforcing wire 16 is housed between the strips 2 and 3 close to the openings 15 and between said openings and the front end of the rearwardly extending portion 5. This wire thus prevents the walls of the openings 10 and 15 from wearing forwardly too rapidly, and also serves to space the strips 2 and 3 apart adjacent the opening 15, whereby the walls of said opening will engage the stem 14 at points considerable distances apart and will, consequently, prevent the stem from swinging within the openings.

When it is desired to fasten the lamp to the cap, the lower portion of the lamp body 13 is CIT forced between the outwardly rolled terminal portions of the clip 11 and said clip thus springs into engagement with the body of the lamp. The lamp can then be pushed downwardly and during this movement the pointed terminal of the stem 14; will come into contact with one of the beads 8 and be deflected thereby and guided into the openings 10 and 15. The parts will thus assume the positions illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. As the clip- 11 firmly engages the lamp at all times, it will be seen that, should the lamp strike an overhanging projection it will not become detached from the cap. In order to detach the lamp it is first necessary to push it upwardly relative to the cap so as to withdraw the pointed end of stem 14 from the openings 10 and 15. The lamp must then be pulled forward with sufficient force to overcome the resistance of the spring arms of clip 11. The intermediate portion of the supporting element 1 obviously serves to support the crown portion of the cap and to support the lamp from the vizor D.

What is claimed is The combination with a cap, of a supporting element including connected strips having rearwardly extending non-yielding portions arranged one above the other and secured upon the crown portion of the cap, there being registering openings within said portions, a combined spacing and reinforc- I ing element interposed between the rearwardly extending portions of the strips and in front of the opening therein whereby said openings are spaced apart, a spring clip eX- tending forwardly from the supporting element, a lamp engaging the clip, a guide .;downwardly upon and engaging solely the wall of the lowermost one of the spaced openings, that portion of the stem above the pointed terminal being held against swinging movement by the wall of the upper open.- ing. 7
