ADJUSTABLE FASTENING DEVICE. i
i Specication of Letters Patent. Application led January 23., 1913. Serial No. 743,869.
Patented Dec. 16, 1913.
Be it known that I, HARRY C. HAZARD, a citizen of the United "States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented or discovered certain new and use-V ful Improvements in Adjustable Fastening. Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has for its object to provide an adjustable fastening devlce, comprising a looped strip of flexible material, such as a pieeeof tape, which may be vcoiiveniently shortened or lengthened, for the purpose of taking up or letting out a portion of a garment or similar device to which one end of such loop is attached. To this end the bight of the loo is passed around the central bar of a buck e member which i/s constructed with two slots which form the said central bar and which provide two outside bars. The buckle member thus mounted on the loop coperates with a second buckle member which is attachedto or connected with the garment or similar article at some distance from the point at which the end of the loop is attached to such garment or'article. This second buckle member is provided with an opening or slot through vwhich the first-named buckle member, with the bight of the loop, may be passed in such a manner that the said first-named buckle member will overlie the second buckle member so as to enable one limb or ply of the loop to be clamped between the central bar of the firstnamed buckle member and what may be termed the inner or free bar of the second buckle member; the said second buckle member being attached to or connected with the garment or the like through the medium of an outer bar thereof which may be secured directly 'to the garment by stitching passing over said outer bar; or may be indirectly attached to such garment by a short loop composed of a strip of fabric and which short loop is attached at one end of the garment with its bight extending around the said outer bar of the second buckle.
With the adjustable fastening device thus constructed the looped strip of fabric, the bight of which passes around the central bar of the first-named or outei` buckle member, may be readily shortened by drawing up its outer ply or limb, and said loop may be lengthened or let out when the said buckle members are slightly loosened or separated from each other.1
By virtue of the construction referred to anyportion of a garment to which the adjusting device may be applied may be readily taken up or let out, and will be securely retained in any desired adjustment. In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 illustrates a portion of a garment, which may be a vwaist-band or belt, with the improved adjustable fastening device applied thereto, and with the adjustable loop somewhat shortened from its full extent. Fig. 2 is a view illustrative of the manner in which the buckle member on the loop may be passed through the slot of the buckle member attached to the garment. Fig. 3 is an enlarged diagrammatic view to show the manner in which the outer limb or ply of the loop is heldin clamped position. Figs.
4 and 5V are detail view s showing differentv ways of attaching the second or inner buckle member to the garment.
Referring to the drawing, 12 denotes a I loop 13 passes around a central bar 15 of a buckle member 16 provided with two slots 17 and 18, forming 'inner and outer side bars 19 and 20, so that the said buckle member is slidably mounted on the loop; or so that the loop may, when desired, be pulled through the said slots. Cooperating with the buckle member 16 is a second buckle member 21 preferably constructed with a somewhat wide slot or opening 22 forming what may be termed inner and outer side bars 23 and 24. The inner side bar 23 is free of the garment, s o as to enable the buckle member 1G to be readily passed through the opening 22 of the said buckle member 21, and the outer side bar of said buckle member 21 is attached to the garment either directly, as by stitching, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, or by a short loop 28, as shown in Fig. 5, and one end of which loop is attached to the garment and the bight of which loop passes around the said outer side of the buckle member 2 1. The buckle member 25, shown in Fig. 4, is provideti with an opening 2 2, throu h which the buckle member 16, with the big t of the loop 13, may be readily passed, and with a free inner sidebar 23, but is provided ,with a bar l26 slightly separated from the outer side bar 24, which is stitched to the garment, by a slot 27. In all of these diderent forms of the invention it will'be understood that the buckle member 16, with the bight of the loop 13 therein, may be readily passed through a slot or opening 22 of the second buckle member 2l in the manner illustrated in Fig. 2;.so that the said buckle member 16 will overlie the buckle member 21 which is attached tothe garment, in such a manner that the outer limb or ply ofthe loop 13 will be clamped between the central bar 15 of the buckle member 16 and the inner or free bar 23 of the underlying buckle member which is attached to or connected with the garment. With the loop thus disposed, when any tension is placed thereon, the said outer lply or limb` of the said'loop will be securely heldin any desired position of adjustment, bybeing clamped between the central bar 15 of the buckle member 16 and the proximate free inner bar -23 of the un-y derlying buckle member; butthesaid loop ,may be readily shortened simply by pulling on theouter ply or limb thereof, andmay be again lengthened, when desired, simply by slightly lifting the buckle member 16 away from theunderlying buckle member, thus releasing the gripy or bind of the two buckle members on the outer limb pr ply of said loop 13.
The invention is netto be understood as being `limited in its use toany particular form of garment, as the adjustable fastening device maybe used with many different garments, as on trousers, belts, or vests, or wherever such an adjustable 'fastening de- .vice of this kind maybe deemeddesirable.
The invention willbe particularly useful in instanceswhere a separable fastening device -is desired, as a separation of the parts of this adjustable fastening device may be qui-cklyand easily effected simply by loosening the outer buckle member 16 and passing it, wlth its bightof the loop 13, inward through the slot -or opening 22 of the'inner orsecond buckle member 2 1. This will be' readilyunder'stood from Fig. 2 which shows inerme larticle, of a loop formed of a doubled strip of material and both` plies of which are attached at one end of said loop to said garment or article, a buckle member mountedv on said loop and vprovided with two slots affording side bars and a central bar around which latter the bight, of the loop passes, and a second bpckle member secured to the garmentor article and provided with a slot orl opening through which thefirst-named buckle member withits bight of fabric may be passed; so that the said first-named buckle member will overlie the said second buckle member in such a manner that the outer limb or ply of the loop maybe clamped between. proximate bars of said buckle members.
2. An .adjustable fastening device comprising the combination with a garment or article, of a loop formed of a doubled strip of material and both plies of which are attached at one end of said loop to said garment or article, a buckle member mounted on said loop and provided withv two slots affording side bars and`a central bar around which latter the bight of the loop passes, and a second buckle member secured to'the garment or article and provided with a slot or opening through which the first-named buckle member with its bight of fabric may be passed; v so that the said first-named buckle member will overlie the said Second buckle'v member in such a manner that the outer limb or ply of the loop may be clamped between proximate bars of said buckle members, said second buckle member being di-v l v rectly secured to the garment or article by stitching passing over an outer bar thereof.
