TOBACCO-HANDLING IMPLEMENT.
menace.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 16, 1913.
Application filed May 26, 1913. Serial No. 770,030.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELVEN NORBO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cashton, in the county of Monroe and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Handling Implements, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in tobacco handling implements and more particularly to lath holding forks for handling tobacco or the like.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be of extremely simple construction and which may be readily clamped upon the end of a handle and which is provided with oppositely directed ears forholding a lath employed for engaging and handling green tobacco or the like.
Another object is to provide an implement of this character which will be of extremely simple construction and composed of the minimum number of parts, and will be highly efficient as well as strong and durable in use and cheaply manufactured.
lVith the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l is a perspective view of my device; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is an edge elevation thereof; and Fig. 4 is an end view with a portion of the socket broken away.
Referring more specifically to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 designates the handle which has its forward end tapered upon opposite sides for engagement between the inner ends of the complementary plates 2 of a handle socket 3. The inner ends of the plate 2 are provided with laterally extending apertured ears 4, the ears of the plates registering to receive thumb screws 5 whereby the plates 5 may be readily secured to the handle. The forward ends of the plates 2 project beyond the outer extremity of the handle, the projecting portions of the plates converging to engage each other and are secured together by rivets 6 or other suitable fastening devices. The projecting portions of the plates are provided on their opposite edges with inwardly extending lath engaging hooks 7, the hooks of each plate being spaced from each other, and the outer edge of the outermost hook of each plate is pro vided with an inwardly extending sharpened dog 8 which is adapted to engage in the lath 9 to maintain the same in engagement with the device.
It will be seen that as the hooks are formed upon each of the projecting portions of the plates, the device is suitable for use either in the left or right hand, and in the practical use of my device, one end of the lath 9 is engaged by the inner hook 7 of either plate whereupon the handle is moved laterally so as to engage the outer hook of the plate with the lath, the dog 8 engaging in the lath and preventing longitudinal movement thereof with relation to the handle. Should it be desired to take down two laths at the same time, one lath may be engaged by the hooks on either plate, whereby the tobacco will be carried without danger of bruising or crushing the leaves.
laving thus described my invention, what I desire to secure and claim by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described comprising a handle socket, said socket being provided with spaced oppositely disposed hooks, one of said hooks being formed with an inwardly offset sharpened dog, as and for the purpose described.
2. A device of the character described comprising a handle, a socket comprising a pair of plates connected to the outer end of the handle, the forward ends of said plates projecting beyond the forward extremity of said handle, and spaced inwardly extending hooks formed on the opposite edges of the projecting portions of said plates, as and for the purpose described.
3. A device of the character described comprising a handle, a socket connected to the outer end of said handle, said socket comprising a pair of plates the forward ends of which project longitudinally from said handle, the projecting portions of said plates converging and being secured together. and the opposite edges of each plate being pro vided with a spaced pair of inwardly extending hooks, as and for the purpose described. v
4. A device of the class described comprising a handle having a socket connected to its outer end, said socket comprising a pair of plates having laterally extending apertured ears whereby the plates are connected together, the forward ends of said plates projecting longitudinally from said handle, the opposite edges of each plate being provided with a pair of spaced inwardly extending hooks and the outer hook of each 4 plate being provided with an inwardly off- 10 set sharpened dog, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
' ELVEN NORBO.
