Specification of Letters latent.
Application filed March 30, 1912.

Serial No. 687,367.
To all whom it only concern:
lle it known that ltonea'r DRUMMOXD, a citizen of the United States of Americafro siding at Philadelphia, in the coul'ity of Philadelphia and dtatc of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful lmprovenients in Permutation -Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to locks and more particularly to the type of lock known as permutation padlocks.
The object of my invention is to provide a lock comprised of but few parts compactly arranged within a comparatively small casing or shell.
the accompanying drawings Figure l is a side elevation of my improvement. .F 2 IS a vertical section through Flg. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 1-1 Fig. 1. Fig.
:l: is a plan view of one of the tumblers and Fig. 5 is a view of spindle detached.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates a casing or shell of any convenient shape formed from a of any suitable material, but preferably of non-corrosive metal. One end of the casing is formed with a cylindrical enlargement 2 bored to form a cylindrical tumbler chain her 3, the top wall, and front wall of which is provided with a keyhole shaped opening 4i and a vertical opening 5 respectively for a purpose hereinafter mentioned. The lower end of the casing has a bore 5' c0ncentric with, but of larger diameter than the chamber 3, and the end of the casing opposite the enlargemerlt has a bore or socket (l for rotatably and slidably retaining one end of a tl-shaped shackle 7, the other end of which is provided with a plurality of notches 8.
9 is a spindle longitudinally grooved as at 10 having a plurality of spaced disks 11 secured thereto by means of pins 12. ll desired thcsedisks may be formed integral with spindle.
A. plurality of rotatable tumblers or disks 13 are arranged on the spindle alternately with respect to the fixed disks 11. The disks 11 and tumblers 13 are oi. the same diameter and each is provided with arecess 14, the recesses in the disks 11 being in vertical alinement when the of the lock are assembled. "ihe disks 11 and tumblers 13 fit snugly within the tumbler chamber 3, but not so tightly to prevent the tumblers from heing rotated. The spindle and tumblers are locked within the'cusinp; by means of a large disk l-it on the lower exul of the spindle fitting within the bore 5, and secured to the casing by any suitable means such as rivets to. The upper and lower ends oi the spindle are flush with the upper and lower ends of the casing with the erccp I ticn of the projection ill on the lower end single piece ot the spindle and it will be noted that the rectangular portion of the. opening; l; in the casing communicates with the groove 10 of the spindle. This projection ll? extends through a central opening in the large disk 14; and is adapted to be grasped by a pair of pliers or the like to facilitate. the withdrawal ot' the spindle and disks whennecessary.
To facilitate the manual rotation of the tumblers the edges of the casing adjacent the vcrti al opening 5, b. l-; and the periphery (f the tumblers are milled.
To lock lllC lock it simply necessary to first manipulate the tumhlers until the recesses therein are in vertical alincnient with the recesses in the disks 11. then insert the notched end of the shackle through opening t, down the groove in the spindle and through the recesses in tumblers and disks. After the shackle has been pushed well home, one or more of the tumbler. is rotated, thus securely locking the shackle against vithdrawal.
For convenience in o 'ierating the lock, the disks 11 are numbered consecutively from 1 to l, the ninnbers being urrai'igcd in vertical alincment. and the tumblers each have one or more letters arranged about their periphery. To bring therecesses in the tumblers in alinen'n-uit with the reccs in the disks ll, a n'edetcrmined cmnbination oi letters are tniought into vertical alinement with each other and with the numbers on the disks. For the sake of illustration, the combination of letters to be brought into register with the vertical opening 5 is l D A. S.
It will be seen from the foregoing that l have devised a lock which owing to its simplicity of sgructure'will he che: p to manufacture and not liable to get out of order.
Having thus described my invention what. I claim is:
A lock comprising a body portion having a cylindrical enlargement at one side bored to form a tubular chamber having a lower open end and a reduced opening in the up perend of the body portion communicating with the bore, the other side of the body portion provided with a vertical socket, .a grooved spindle and having a reduced upper end passing through the reduced opening in the upper end of the body portion, a plurality of spaced members fixed to the spindle and snuglyfitting the tubular chamber and provided with recesses, rotary members interposed between the said fixed members and having recesses adapted to register with the recesses in the fixed members, a disk closing the lower end of the tubular chamber and Within the tubular chamber having a central opening, a pin carried by the spindle passing through said opening, and a shackle having one end rotatablyand slid-ably secured Within the socket and the other end of said shackle being notched and entering the groove in the spindle and to fit said recesses.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
