IMPRCVEMENT IN PROJECTILE'S. m
ne'sensauxe retoma to m um. Lenen razen: and mais; pm el the' om.. -v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES G. HOPE, of Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State ot Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Project-iles; and I do' hereby and exact ble others skilled in t same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, hv
Figures l and 2 are detail views of balls made .in acconlance with my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parte.A Y
-My'invention has for its object to furnish an improvement in balls 'and otherprojcctiles, by means of which the ball or other projectile m'ay be fired in curved lines with-the same accuracy as in straight lines; and It consists in constructing the ball with a curved tiat piece upon its base, whether used with or without a. curved' ilat scribed. i I
A represents the body of the projectile, which may made in any of the well-known forms used in the point, .as hereinafter more fully de- -Upon the base'of the body A is formed a rearwardly-projecting piece or plate, B, which is made t, as shown in fig. 1, to take a good hold upon the air, and is curved, as` shown in fig. 2, to canse. it to more npoh a curved' line.
T e piece or guide B should be curved to exactly correspond wi th'aI portion ofthe line upon which it is desired to have tl e projection move.
le forward end .or part of the projection may have a 4iattened point, O, formed upon it, as shown in fig.
1,-which :dattened point should becurved to corre- 4herein shown and described forthnvhether the curved and flattened point 0 he spoud with the curve ofthe guide B,' as shown in E 2, as an additional guide in causing the projectile to ,move in the desiredline.
The projectiles may be made with or without the curved flattened points 0,-as may he desired.
The projectiles thus formed must be used in arms made with straight grooves or rides, or in arms having' smooth bores, as the guide B or guides B O will prevent the projectile from twisting or revolving d nr ling its flight, which greatly increases the range and accuracy ofthe fire.
Y t should be observed that the projectile must he placed .l
in any other direction. s
Having' thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Paten 1. The curved,- and iiattened piece or guide B, formed upon the base of a projectile, snbsta.ntially as and for the purpose set used or not.
2. .lhe cul-'ved and flattened point O, formed upon the forward end of a projectile, when used in connection with the curved and flattened guide B, formed upon the hase of said projectile, substantially as here.
in shown and described, and forth.
for the purpose set The above-specitcation of my invention signed hy me this 15th day of August, 1870.
JAMES G. HOPE. Witn esscs Juanes T. GRAHAM, T. B. MOSHER.
