STAMPING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 18, 1913.
Application filed January 2, 1913. Serial No. 739,784.
To aZZ whom it may concern Beit known that l, Don J. Hmcnsnornnsn citizen of the L ted States, residing at Rial-to, in the county of Lee and State of Florida, have invented ccrtaiin new and useful Improvements in Stamping evices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in stumping devices employed for stumping or printing an impression upon various articles, but designed more particularly for use in stomping characters upon boxes or other closures, and has for one of its objects to provide a simply constructed device WllEfG by a plurality of stamps or printing faces are connected to a single body and adapted to be employed one at a time and independently so that s variety of dill'erent marks or characters will he applied successfully to a series of boxes or other closures by simply turning the device until the desired charnctiers in position to be closure.
Another ohject oi? the invention is to provide a, simply construct-ed device whereby the diliercnt character impressing devices be dctzic-ha-bly connected and readily hie Whei'i desired or to enable the; znnrks do be renewed when impaired. or worn;
may chang out.
or quality.
With these and other objects in View the; invention consists in cert-sun novel features of construction in iii volition, Figure l Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the. following description and indicated 3 in all the views of the drawings by the some reiercnce characters.
The improved device comprises av body,
represented as 2t whole at 10, and preferably l constructed or block of Wood with a plurality of relatively long llnt'faces around the and a. plurality of relatively short list laces conne-c' g the longer fiat faces. Any required number of the flat faces may be employed, out generally eight of each size impressed uponv the Another objectol the invention is to proride simply constructed device whereby i the character or mark is associated with l other characters or marks denoting its value hereinafter shown andiioed and then specifically pointed out aims, and in the drawings illustratiie of. the preferred, embodiment outline in a top plan View partly in section or the improved device. Fig. 2 is will be used, as illustrated. The longer flat faces are represented at 11 and the connecting lint faces at 12. The upper face of the block or body 10 is fiat, as shown in Fig. 1, while the lower face is formed with a relatively small flat face 13 and with a plurality of obliquely extending faces indicated at 1- 1 connecting the faces 13 .With the adjacent margin of the body. Bythis means when the body is located in a vertical-position, as shown in Fig. 2, the projecting face 13 provides a bearing to support the flat side portions 11-12 spaced above the supporting structure. The annular faces 14 are uti lized to contain characters denoting the quality of the goods or other information, as hereafter explained.
Extending over the fiat faces 11-12 from the upper flat face of the block or body is an encompassing rib 15, While a similar rib 16 extends laterally from the body or block at the lower sides of the flat feces. By this means the body or block is entirely encompassed by the ribs and'forms the flat faces into a continuous channel-like conformation. The ribs iii--16 opposite the smaller Jflat faces 12- cm of less width than the ortioris of the ribs opposite the longer fiat aces 11,, as shown.
The channel-like conformuti on of thc block or body is designed to receive a continuous strip of flexible material, such as relatively hard rubber 17 upon the outer face of which suitable characters are formed iii-raised Z ures, as represented at 18, and form the printing surfaces of the stamp device. The portion of the strip 17 which comes opposite to the longer fiat faces ll-are thicker than the portions oi'thc strip which come ,oppo' site to the shorter fist surfaces 16, as shown. The thicker portions of the strip correspond substantially to the Width of the portions of the. ribs 15-16 which are located opposite to. the longer fiat faces, leaving the printing characters 18 projecting beyond all of the faces of the body. The thicker portions of the strip 17 which come opposite to the shorter fiat faces 12 are designed to replace by screws or other fastening devices 20 and operatethrough the clamp lutes and the thinner portions of the strip 1 and into the body or block 10., By this simple means the strip of flexible material, which contains the printing characters, is firmlysup ortcd in position upon the block or body an leavceive clamp plates 19, which are secured ining the printing characters projecting beyond all of the faces of the body.
A suitable handle 21 is connected to the body centrally of its flat side as shown.
The inclined faces 14 are provided with characters denoting the quality of the goods to be stamped, and any suitable characters may be employed, but for the purpose of illustration the characters denoting the quality of oranges, grape fruit, and the like, are shown for the purpose of illustration and the words Fancy, Bright, Golden and Russet are employed and the characters 96, 100 and 28 are shown upon the longer thicker portions of the flexible strip, which are in view in Fig. 2, the characters denoting the number of oranges or grape fruit which are deposited in the closure to be stamped. Thus for illustration, the character 100 is shown located opposite the character Fancy, and enabling the shipper or fruitgrower. when he has a box containin 100 oranges of the fancy grade or quality to readily'stamp the box with that mark by turning the body 10 until the character 100, which has previously been applied, to the ink pad in the ordinary manner, upon the box, and can thus print the same thereon, and similar marks may be likewise applied to other closures asrequired. By providing a plurality of dif ferent characters the range of the improved device is greatly increased. By this means a shipper is not required to provide a plurality of separate stamps for each grade or quality of goods, which are liable to become lost or broken, but can very quickly mark the different packages by simply turning the implement until the required character is next to the package to be marked. The flexible strip, which is preferably endless, and slightly smaller than the circumference of the combined faces 1l-12 oflthe body, will be sprung into the space between the-ribs 15l6 when applied, and is thus held from displacement by its own resiliency. The clamp plates 19 are then applied which prevent the strip from creeping around the body when in use, but will retain the strip with the thicker portions opposite the longer flat faces. v
The faces 13 enable thedevice to be supported above the shelf or. other receptacle when not in use and protect the printing faces from injury.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured and materially decreases the labor and expense of applying the denoting brands to packages.
lVhatis claimed is: i. A stamping device comprising a body niembe 3. A. stamping device comprising a body ters, and fastening devices operating through the clamping members.
2. A stamping device comprising a body having an encompassing channel formed into a plurality of relatively long flat faces and relatively short connecting flat faces, an end'-.
less member of flexible material engaging in said channel and having printing characters thereon opposite the longer fiat faces,'cla!nping members bearing over the flexible member opposite the short fiat faces, and fastening devices operating through the clamping having an encompassing channel formed into a plurality of relatively long flat faces and relatively short connecting flat faces, an endless member of flexible material engaging in said channel and having printing characters thereon opposite the longer flat faces and with the material of the endless member reduced opposite the shorter fiat faces, clamping members bearing over the flexible member opposite the reduced portions, and fastening devices operating through the clamp mg members.
4. A stamping device comprising a body a having its margin formed into a plurality of relatively long flat'faees and relatively shortconnecting flat faces, an endless member of flexible material engaging said flat faces and having printing characters thereon opposite the longer flat faces and with the material of the endless member reduced opposite the shorter flat faces, clamping members bearing over the flexible member opposite the reduced portions, and fastening devices operating through the clamping members.
5. A stamping device comprising a body having its margin formed into a plurality of relatively long flat faces and relatively short connecting flat faces, an endless member of flexible material engaging said flat faces and having printing characters thereon opposite the longer flat faces, clamping members bearing over the flexible member opposite theshorter' flat faces, and fastening devices operating through the clampin r members.
In testimony whereof I a x my signature in presence of two witnesses.
