Patented Nov. 11, 1913.
Application filed May 12, 1913. Serial No. 766,932.
T0 all whom it may concern:
7 Be it known that I, JAMES H. MATTHEWS, aclt-izen of the United States, and residlng i'inthe city of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have More particularly it comprises new and 'improved'means for mounting and securing interchangeable type blocks in said dies.
The ObJQCl'S 111 view are the PlOVlSlOn of means for that purpose wh ch will pernnt the ready installation or removal of said i type blocks and which will securely hold them in place against accidental loosening or dismounting. 1
A. further object is to insure the proper setting of the type, thus preventing the loss I time and injury. to the type which relts from improper setting of the same in the die. n
These objects are accomplished by providing the type slot or recess with a lockihgdiar having acaniportion which, when the bar. is turned to one position engages "rooves'in' the type-blocks and locks the .atter rigidly in place, but, when said bar is turned to the opposite position, releases said blocks and permits their ready rernoval or installation in the slot. Means are provided for locking the said bar in either position. No loose or detachable parts are used which might become lost. and cause great inconvenience and no hammer or other tool 'is. required to operate said locking bar.
.' In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated my invention,'.for the sake of fclearness in connection with a hammer-die but itwill be understood that it may as readily be applied to any form of hand or machine operated die. p
In saidv drawings Figure 1 is a perspective of a hammer-die fitted with my inven- --tion; Fig.2 is a horizontal sectional view tion; Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective of the locking-bar dismountedyand Fig. 5 is a perspective of one of the type blocks.
The following is a detailed description of the drawings: Y
A the die, such for instance the ham iner-die showm and 1 is the slot .or recess inwhich the interchangeable type-blocks H are set.
2 is a bore, preferably cylindrical run-' cut away so as' to form a} semi-circular cam which,- when said bar is turned into the position shown in Fig. 2 occupies the bore The portion of said locking-bar which intersects the slot 1 is 2, but, when said bar is turned 180 into the position shown in Fig. 3,: extends into the slot '1. i with semi-circular grooves 4': in their edges which are adapted to engage said cam 3, when said locking-bar is properly turned, thus locking said blocks securely in said slot 1. By turning the bar into the opposite position, said blocks are released and may be removed from said slot 1 or blocks .may be freely inserted into said slot. As
shown in the drawings, said locking-bar and bore are below the horizontal center of the slot 1 and the grooves ;4. are below the center of the blocks B so that said blocks must be set in the proper position to be locked in said slot, the grooves 4 being provided on onlyLone face of saidblo'cks. By this arrangement improper setting or reversal of 'the'blocks in the slot is impossible, thus avoiding the loss of time and injury to the type which now frequently result. from care less and improper setting.
One of the protruding ends of bar C is provided with a head 5 between which and angles, as at 7.
The type-blocks B' are provided shown in Fig. 3, locking the seat 8 toward the striking face of the u with the grooves 4c of the type-blocks I 8 is a groove in'the end of die A intersecting the bore 2 vertioelly looking seats for the 11d Y of th 3 4 When the her essumes the position the blocks B, the
- adjacent to the striking face of the die A,
the position first above described. 7
it is evident that the typeblocks may be readily installed in o removed from the slot 1, locked or unlocked therein, and that their proper setting in said slot is insured; No loose or unattached parts are used which may become lostand cause inconvenience and the mechanism is simple, inexpensive and contains no element likely to Wear out or. be broken. The use of the die in striking the necessary blows will not loosen the rocking bar but the type-blocks are held securely in place, which is impossible Where Wedge members or set-screws are used to hold the type-blocksin the slot.
Whatl desire to claim is i l. The'combination of a die provided with a typeslot, type adapted tooe set in saidslot and provided with looking grooves, a bar mounted to rock in said die and provided with a cam adapted to engage said her being provided with cam which,
