Description
P. H. LETTRIE.
BOX FASTENER.
APPLICATION IILED APILM, 1013.
Inventor Application time April 5%, 191225.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that it, PHILIP I'L ihn'r rin z a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro Falls in the county of Bristol and State of ii tosseehnsetts, have in vented a new and use'lini Boyl astener, of which the fotlowing is a specification This invention relates to her; it: steners.
An object of the present invention to provide an improvettforni of box festener which is aria ted to fasten and holri :eeenreiy in place the .eps ot" a, box.
A further object is to provide :1 fastener especially adaptable for boxes to he need, in connection with; the pnrcei poet whereby the box may he used a, number of times, the instener being such that the flaps are held rigidly and securely in piece and at the some time provide easy and readily neceesihie means for the disengaging oi the hex. flaps; for the opening thereof.
A further object is to provide a met-13in; fastener rigidly secured to one flap ot :1 box and. adapted to engage the other two iinps and to hold the same in closed position.
iVith the foregoing and other ohieete in View whichv will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of ports and in the details of construction hereinafter i'ieli'iil'iiiwli and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment: of ii1Li1l-- vention herein disclosed, can bennnie wi thin. the soope of what is claimed, without (icparting from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings accompanying; ti he -peeitiention and forming a part thereof the pref" emble term of my invention is iilnstraiteri, in which Figure l is a View in perspective, iiinee trating' the first step in securing my in-r proved fastener to the iinpe of :1 box, Fig. 2 is a, View in perspective of the box in a. par tially ciosed position. Fig. 3 represents in perspective the box in :1 closed position and the fastener rigidly secured thereto nnri heirling the hon flaps closed. Fin. 4i represents the blank forming my improved teetener. Fig. represents'in perspective the fastener prior to inserting the some through the flops of a box. Fig. 6 represents the tasstener as it appears in the box prior to the eiosing of the thins as illustrated in Fig 2" Referring to the drawings in which 5iiniior reference numerals designate correspond-- tipeoiticntion of Letters fitment.

and holds the same in 1" id relation to et that an'eflicient under fla s with the and rigi fastener is obtained. The said box fastener is preferablymiade from sheet metal so that the same be readily bent to the shape desired. and-Vt e metal used in the construction thereofso selected that the fastener may be used and bent into its closed and open position a successive number of time's without liability of the same becoming broken or cracked. f p
From the foregoing'it will be apparent that my improved box fastener is adapted to rigidly secure the flaps of a box or receptacle in a ,e osed position and maintain the same rigidly so ositioned. The fastener is particularly aptable to those boxes whichFare to be used a number of times inconnection withtheparcel post'alnd other transporting means, n which case-it be'noted that the fastener having been onoe' rigidly secured to the under or transverse flap 2 is notjdisturbed with relation to this flap but have the'wings 8 crimpeddown upon the under surface of the flap in a rigid manner and remains in this position. 'When it. is desired to open the box from the osition illustrated in Fig. 3, the head 6 o the. fastener is first bent upwardly and the, longitudinal or overlying'flaps -3 may then brought.
upwardly and at the same timeietracted from the center portion of the boxto bring the same out of the restricted passages defined by the base 4 and thehead 6 which is s aced a distance therefrom by means :of t e neck 5 which is of a limited length.
From the foregoing it will be apparent {,that a number of the fasteners such as I 40 have described may be used upon each and every box, the exact number depending upon the size of the box in question and the strength of the fasteners. The triangular form of thehead of the fastener provides that the vertices thereof will overlie the upper flaps and contact with sufficient surface thereof to obtain a rigid purchase thereon,
Havin thus fully described the inventiw what I c aim to be new and original Witt. me is t In a device'of the class described the (3031b bination with a receptacle having'upper and lower flaps, of a fastener comprising .a base with wings extending through the under flap and; bent 'into, engagement therewith, a restricted neck projecting from said base, a head connected to said neck the restricted notches defined by the head base receiv ing the uppler box flaps therein said. head bent at rig t angles to the said into contact with'the upper surface'of said upper flap to securely I old said flaps in a closed position andin-ri id relation.
In testimon that If aim the foregoing as my Own, I ave hereto: aflixed my s1gnature in the presence of twowitness'es;
