WILLIAM si ccLwELL, or .Prrfrseune `Pnunsern vr\.`i\ini.`
haters Patent No. 107,665, dated september 27, 1870.
y IMPRovEMEN'TJNBLowERs.
The Schedule Vreferred tuin `these Letters Patent and making part of the same.'
Be ,i4-known thatI,L WILLIAM S. CoLWnnL, of Pxttsburg'1nthgfconnty of Allegheny and State ot' Pennsylvaniahave*invented anew and useful Imi `provement 1u Fans nr `,Blower's; and Ido hereby de clarethat the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.thercofllreference being had to the accompauyiugdrawuig and `to the 4letters and viigures of reference marked thereou.
The natu-re otf my invention consists in providing a funor blower with two or more chambers, `in one of which are loats, which are set at oblique angle to the axisfof the fan-shaft, and the other chamber or chambers provided with a clearing-arm or arms, which -1-otatewith the fan-shaft.
My invention also consists in providing the chain- I her in-whichtheiloats rotate, with a revolving'screen,
consisting of a perforated disk or net-work, and pro- Vviding said screenv with a stationary cleaner.
My invention further consists in providing `the fan shaft with adjustable supports and bearings, whichv can be set audadj usted to thejournal of' the fau-shaft `as it audits bearings wear away. i
` .To enable others skilled inthe art to make and use my.1nvention,I will proceed to describe lnore fully its construction and operation".
Inthe accompanying drawing which forms `part of my specication- Figure 1, .sheet A, is aside elevation of my-im-` I provemeut 1n fans and blowers. I
Figure 2 is a verticaly and longitudinal section of the same, when cut through at line yof iig; 3, shown. i iu'sheet B. i 'i `Figure 3 is an `end elevation of the fau.
Figure 4 is a vertical section of the same when cut' through at line y of tig; `1, shown in sheet Ai p `Figure 5 is a side view` ot' the journal-bearing for the fan-shaft.
Figure 6 is an cud View of the clamp or ball-socket, used fnrholdng the oil-chamber and journal-bearing 1u position. In the accompanying drawiugx 'A represents theca'se or shell of the fau' or blower. B represents a bell-mouth throat 'for the ingress of aix-.and other matter, which may be `drawn into the shell by the `suction caused by therotating of the V'oats F, which air and matter are forced cutthrough` n', which is nem in a@ desired position on the Siae ofthe case A by and through the medium of iscrews fand the groove e' in the angc 6. i
`By securing theriugs E and E' in position by Aand through the medium of the screws, and the grooves hcreinbefore described, the supports -for the fau-shaft can be adjusted to suit the position and angleof the .driving-belt for the fau-shaft H and its drivinglpulley l?. lThe journals of the fau-shafts H are tapering, and rotate iu bearings I, which are provided with iiauges `O, which, in connection with screws X, hold the bearings I inthe oil-chamber J, Vwhich is fitted in a socket, K, which is a section of la ball, withA an opening throughits center, adaptedl to the outer diameter of the oil-chamber J. v l
The ball-socket K is cut open, as indicated at 8, in ig.`6, sheet B, and is fitted in the vsupports D 'and B', and held inpositiouthrough the medium of flange or disk 0 and screws 'X'. The oil-chambers .I 'are provided with cup's N, for couducting'oil into the chamber which surrounds the journalbearing I of the fan-shaft.
The ,outer surface of the journal-hearing I is provided with a spiral groove or grooves, as indicated at S, in which is a series of small openings, t, which communicate with the interior of the journal I, for the purpose of allowing the oil inchamber J to iiow Vinto the interior of thejournal-beariug I, and thereby keep the `set-screw M and the journals of the shaft H properly lubricated. A, l
The grooves S in the journal-hearing I may be filled with cotton-wick, so that the oil will only seap into the journal-bearing. L
The oil-chamberJ and journal-bearingl can be set and adjusted by and through ,the medium of the setscrews X to the journals of the shaft- H as they and the bearings wear away.
The -set-screws YM are used I for the purpose of preventing lateral motion ot' the fau-shaft H.
'lhe oats or wingsF are attached to the spiders vor centers 3 3 3, which are secured ina `fixed position on the fanlshaft, and the plane of their face is set at au obliqueangle to the axis of thefau-shaft H.
By this arrangement ofthe floats F, greater suction and forcing power are obtained. v
The oats F are rotated in the chamber G, which is separated from the chamber G' by a partition, m, in which' rotates a" screen, u, which may cousistnf a perforated plate or net-work, secured on or to the center or spider 4. This screen -u and partition m are used' for the purpose of preventing-shaviugs, sawdust,' or other -matter from coming in contact with the oats, when the fan is usedfor, the purpose of conducting and-forcing such matter from one place to anotner, as, for example, the shavings from a planingmachine, or saw-dust fromV a saw to a furnace or other place. When the fan is used forthis purpose, the
shavings, saw-dust, orother matter, is drawn into the chamber G', and the forcing action of floats .1?, and the rotating of the cleaning-arms R, will force the shaving, saw-dust, or other matter from the chamber G' into a suitableconductor, which should be attached to the outlet C of the case A.'
' To the lower inner side of the bell-mouthed throat B is attached a cleaning-arm, X, which projects in-` waid to the screen u, and extends upward, and is set at such an angle as is best adapted for keeping the screen clean from the shavings, saw-dust, and such other matter as may be drawn into the chamber G.
The fan or blower hereinbefore described maybe used for any purpose to which itis or canbe adapted.
Having thus described the nature, construction, and operation of my improvement,
What I claim as of my invention is- 1. The case A, divided into two or more chambers by a partition or partit-ions, and used in combination with the floats F, revolving screen lu, and cleaningarm or arms R, substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination o f a revolving screen with the fioatsgor wings of a fan or blower, substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the rings E and E', 4setscrews fand j', grooves c and e and flanges 5 and 6, with the supports D and B', and shaft H and its drivving-pulley, substantially as herein4 described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination of the journal-bearings I with oil-chamber J, supports D and B', and journals ofshaft H, substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination of the set-screw M with the journal-bearing I, oil-chamber J, set-screws X, and shaft H, substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth. v
6. The combination of the ball-socket K, ange or disk O', set-'screws X', oilchamber J, and .journalbearing I with the supports D and B 'and shaftH, substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
7. The journal-bearing I, providedwith grooves S and openings t, communicating with the interior of the journal-bearing, as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
8. The combination of the stationary cleaning-arm X with the revolving screen u, substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
9. The floats or wings of a fan or blower, when the plane of their face forms an obtuse angle with a line radial from the axis of the fan-shaft, substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
