APPLICATION FILED Nov. 2o, 1912,

l' :BUZZ-BALL.
Application filed Eovember 20, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known -thatv l, Bessin E. DANIEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kurtz, in the county ot' Jackson and State .of lndiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buzz-Balls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in whirling toys, and has for its primary object the provision of toy of this nature which shall be extremely simple in its construction, attractive to the eye and very musical..
Another and more specic object of the invention resides in the provision of a toy of this nature consisting of a hollow spherical body formed with diametrically opposed openings therein and having a. centrally positioned disk apertured to receive a cord which passes through the first mentioned openings.
l The invention also aims to generally improve toys of this nature, to render them more attractive, endurable and commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in view, 'as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the tollowing description and accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure l is a side elevation oi' my improved toy, Fig. 2 a sectional view through lthe same on the plane of line 2-2, parts 'thereof' being shown in elevation, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken at right angles to the plane of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing hy numerals, 1 designates a hollow sphere preferably formed of some light material, such as pastehoard, and having the diainctrically positioned openings 2. 'A disk 3 is centrally positioned within the `sphere 1 and has i'ormed upon its diametrical center the open-v ings 4, through which a looped string 5 passes, said string alsol passing through the openings 2. A plurality of bells t3 are attached to the sphere 1 by means ofthe wire 7. This wire is prevented from slipping oil the sphere l by astrip 8 of -errible material such as cloth or paper. rllfhis ,strip Specification of Letters Patent.

ored so as Ato add to the attractiveness of .the toy. To further increase the musicalness of the toy, l provide a plurality of `sounding reeds l0, which are fixed at their outer ends within openings in the sphere l,
and which may be so constructed as to produce diilerent musical notes as air is drawn through them.
ln the operation of my improved toy the string is first twisted a iew times and then by moving the outer portions thereoi` alternately toward and awayfrom each other the sphere is caused to rotate rapidly, first in one direction and then in the other. As the sphere rotates air will be drawn through the openings over the reeds l0 producing a musical. sound, and at each reverse movement the bells 6 willring. t will be seen that the disk reinforces the sphere and that the spaced openings l in said disk serve to spread the strands of the string 5, whereby the sphere may be easilyfrotated. rEhe wire 7 provides an easy method oif attaching the bells, and the ornamental strips 8 and 9 serve the double purpose of securing the wire 7 in position. and increasing the attractiveness of the toy.
lt is to be understood that while l have shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, do not wish to be limited to this exact construction, but may make such changes as will fall within the scope and spirit of the invention.
l claim:
A whirling toy comprising a hollowr sphere, having diametrically opposed openings formed in the wall thereof, a centrally positioned disk mounted within said sphere and formed with a pair of spaced openings, a looped string, having each of its strands passedthrough the openings in the sphere., and one of its strands passed through each of the openings in said disk, a wire extending circumferentially around the periphery oi' the sphere, `a plurality of hells secured to said wire, and a plurality or sounding reeds having their outer ends fixed 'in openings in the walls of the sphere. l
- ln testimony whereof:I it aix my Ysignature in presence of two witnesses.
