JAMES W. MELLOR., 0E PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 107 ,519, dated September 20, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN MUSIC LEAF-TURNERS.
The Schedule referred to :in these Letters Patent and making part of the sama To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. MnLLon, ot' Ihiladelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State oi' Pennsylvania, lhave invented a newv and Improved Music Leaf-Turner and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable 4others skilled in theart to make and use the same, reference heilig had to the ac` oompanying drawing forming part ot this specification.
Figure l represents a -front elevation of a piano that is provided with my improved leaf-turner.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view, on an enlarged scale, ot' the arbor lcarrying the cam and ratehetwheel, and 'its connections employed thereon,
Similar let-ters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new apparatus for holding the leavesof music on a piano, or other musical instrument, aad for turning the same by the. action ot a foot on a pedal.A
The, main object of this invention is to sinmlity the construct-ion of a music leatlturner, so that the same can be cheaply constructed, and not readily get out 0f order.
A in the drawing represents the frame ot a pianoforte, behind and above the key-board of' the sanie.
This frame serves to support an upright pin or arbor, a, ou which the leaves B B, that hohl the. music, are pivote-d.
rIhe leaves B are ot' suitable consti-notion, and eon tain suitable springs, fingers, or other devices, for holding the leaves.
Springs, b b, which are connected with the several leaves respectively, tend to swing them' to the left side.
C is a horizontal transverse arbor, iitted through thev frame A. It contains at its front end a cam, d, which has'a projecting arm bearing against the front faces of the leaves B, for holding said springs on the right-hand side, against the action of their springs.
Upon the rear end ofthe arbor C- is mounted a ratchet-wheel, e.
f is a lever or crank, turning loose on the rear part ofthe arbor O, and connected by a rod, g, with a lever, h, that is pivoted to the lower frame ot` the piano.
C lhe treadle D is connected with the lever h.
A spring, t, applied to the lever h, serves to hold the treadle up, and also the crank f.
To the face ot' the crank f is pivoted a pawl, j, which is, by a spring, It, held in Contact with the ratchet-wheel c.
Each leaf B has a notch cut into itsupper part, which notch is so placed and shaped that the arm ot the cani d, when in a certain position, will fit it an d clear the leat B, allowing the spring I) to swing it to the lett.
The notches in the several leaves are so placed that the cam can only fit one at a time, requiring successivc motion in the samel direction t'or successively releasing thc leaves to the action of the springs b.
The operation is as follows:
The leaves, when swung to the right, are all held in position by the cam rl, and hold the music-leaves t0 the right too.
'Ihe eam is so placed that one motion of the pedal, carrying the ratchet-wheel around by the pawl, will bring it in line with the first notch of the leaf B, allowing the spring b to throw the sanio to the loft.
The next motion of the pedal will bring'the cam in line wit-h the notch of the second leaf, and so on; every successive motion of' the pedal releasing another leal', until they have all been swung to t-helei't.
Ihc leaves can he locked again under the cani by carrying them all over to the right, and turning the cani into the proper position.
It is evident that in place of notches in the leaves, and a projecting arm on the cani, there may be projecting pins on the leaves, and a notch or notches in the cam, or its equivalent.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim new and desire to secureby Letters Patent- `The combination, with the ordinary arbor a, of pivoted leaves B, springs b, and spring-fingers of the horizontal transverse arbor C, cani d, ratchet device k, lever f, rod g, spring lever h i, and treadle D D, all arranged and operating together, as and for the purpose described.
