A link 25 connects the arm 22 above itsv pivot with a bell crank lever 26 pivoted in a bracket or projection on the frame of the machine, and a spiral spring 27 applied to the link tends to hold the arm 22 in upright position. In the end of the arm or lever 22 is a. roller 28 Whose axis is inclined to the longitudinal axis of the lever arm and is transverse'to that of the platen. When the roller is in operative position, adjacent one side of the ribbon vibrator, its'carrying arm or lever 22 1s inclined away from 1t toward the side of the machine. The lever arm swings in a plane parallel with the axis of the platen and when elevated the roller comes into such juxtaposition to the surface of the platen as to prevent material springing of the cards or paper away from the platen. The angle of the arm and its fiat edge against which the spring 24: bears when the arm is depressed are such that the arm 22 and roller lie well below the scale and behind the usual ribbon that passes through the vibrator, and isout of the path of sheets fed to the machine. At eachside of the roller 28 the arm is formed with deflectors 29, inclined or curved away from the platen and acting to deflect, between the roller and the platen, cards, paper or envelop flaps that might tend to pass outside of the roller or to collide with it. The card holding surface 28 (which, in the form illustrated, is a roller) is closely adjacent the edge of the ribbon vibrator and is therefore quite near the printing point. This surface or roller 28 so cooperating with the platen extends from below across or above the line of print. It serves to hold cards, envelops or sheets closely against the platen and in the transverse movements of the platen prevents the edges of such cards, sheets and envelope coming in contact with the ribbon or ribbon vibrator.
It will be observed that the paper holding and guiding rollers 11 006 erate with the platen in a line above or eyond that in which lies the end of card holder 28 and also that the center card holder 12 terminates above the li'pe pf rint and in a line above the end of the card holder and guide 28, 29. The drawing shows but one such card holder and guide 28, 29 andhence it has been shown on the right hand side of the ribbon vibrator because, if there be but one, it is most effective at that point;
The paper holding means lying across the line of print adjacent the printing point terminates a short distance above the upper edge of the vibrator and hence does not constitute a material obstruction to the operators view of the front surface of the platen which in a machine such as that disclosed is quite open so that matter printed upon a sheet in the machine may be read with considerable facility.
I claim:
1. In a visible writing'machine, the combination with the platen of a paper holder comprising an arm pivoted in front of the platen and capable of being rocked transversely of the machine from normal substantially horizontal position to an upright position into operative relation to the platen and having at its operative end forwardly inclined paper deflectors.
2. In a visible writing machine, the combination with the platen of a paper holder comprising an arm pivoted in front of the platen and capable of being rocked transversely of the machine from normal substantially horizontal position to. -a n upright position into operative relation to the platen.
3. In a visible writing machine the combination with the transversely movable platen of a paper holder stationary with respect to the transverse=movement of the platen, mounted in'front thereof, extending across-the line of print adjacent the printing point and movabletransversely of the machine to below the line of print and out of operative relation to the surface of the platen.
4.-. In a visible typewriting machine, the combination with the platen of apaper holding device adapted to hold the paper against the platen adjacent the printing point and comprising a roller that lies across the line 0' print and whose axis is transverse to that of the platen.

In a visible typewriting machine, the combination with the transversely movable platen of a paper holding device stationary with respect to the transverse travel of'the platen and adapted to hold the paper againstthe platen adjacent the printing point and comprising a roller that lies across the line of print and whose axis is transverse to that of the platen and paper holding devices extending over the platen from the rear thereof and eooperating with the first named device to hold the paper being printed upon.
7.
