10 .J' A q J ARMIN ENGELHARD, OF OFFEN UNIVERSAL RADIAL DRILL,
Specification of Letters Patent.
BAcH-on-Tns-MAIN, GERMANY.
PORTABLE 01 8, 0N WHEELS.
Application filed August 13, 1912. Serial No. 714,763.
7 '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARMIN ENonLnAnu, engineer, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Offenbach on the Main, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Universal Radial DrillsJOrtable or on WVheels, of whichthe following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improve ments in portable drilling machines, and has among others for its objects to provide an apparatus which may be readily manipulated so as to operate upon stationary work to bore or drill holes therein in as widely varying positions as possible.
The invention includes the novel features of construction and arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly defined by the appended claim.
An embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which"- Figure 1 is a side elevation and Fig. 2 is a similar view a quarter turned.
Referring by reference characters to this drawing, the numeral 1 designates the frame of a suitable carriage provided with wheels 2 designed to run upon the shop floor or other support, the frame being provided with jack screws 3 having floor blocks 3 at their lower ends, and in miles 3 at the upper ends by which the carriage may be jacked up to raise the wheels oil? the floor when in proper position, and thus insure its being held stationary. Upon the bed 4 of the carriage is slidably mounted a base 5 capable of being locked in its adjusted position by means of a suitable locking device 6. This base carries a pedestal 7 within which is rotatably supported the lower end of a post or column 8. On this post is a vertically movable saddle 9 which i; counterbalanced by chains 10 passing over rollers 10 at the top of the column and connected to a suitable counterweight (not shown) within the post. Pivotally supported from the saddle by pivot pin 11 are a pair of guides 12 within which the divided arm 13 which carries the boring or drilling tool is slidably mounted. One of the guides 12 has a quadrant 14 provided with a slot 14 engaged by a guide bolt 14 carrying a clampingnut, and said quadrant has a worm gear on its edge which is engaged by a worm 15 operated from pawl lever 16 through ratchet wheel 17 on the shaft of the worm. The drill head 18 is supported from the end of this arm by horizontal and vertical pivots so as to have a universal connection, and may be driven in any suitable manner through belt 19 from motor 20 on the rear end of the arm.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
In combination a suitable carriage, a pedestal slidably supported thereby, a column rotatably supported by said pedestal, a saddle vertically adjustable on said column, a guide pivotally mounted on said saddle, an arm slidably carried by said guide, and a drill holder having a universal mounting on the end of said arm. a
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ARMIN' ENGELHARD.
Witnesses JEAN GuUNo, hum Guurm.
