ERNEST F. LLOYD, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
CLOSURE FOR GAS-PURIFIERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December a, 1912. Serial No. 735,202.
Patented Sept. 16, 1913.
To aZZ whom it may concern: a 1
Be it known that I, ERNns'rF. LLOYD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented cerand at the same time to afford ample drainage for water or melting snow and ice.
This invention relates to a closure for gas purifiers tanks or the like and more particularly to an arrangement thereof which insures resistance against any internal pressure and ready drainage of theclosure regardless of weather conditions, and tightly seals the receptacles.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a closure for a gas purifier or tank that embodies features of the invention; Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a view in detail of the fastening and scupper draining arrangement; and Fig. 1 is a view in detail'of the soupper and clamping means.
As herein shown a purifier or tank of preferred form and dimensions, preferably made of masonry or cement, has a curb wall 1 that may be provided with a plate 2, and from which anchor bolts 3 extend upwardly. A closure that conforms substantially to the tank, is made of a deck 4 of sheet metal or the like that is supported at its margins on the inwardly projecting flanges 5 of depending side and end plates 6 the latter forming an unbroken flange around the deck. An'angle bar 7 on the outslde of each of the latter co acts with a clamping strip 8 and bolts 9 or like holding means to retain a gasket 10 of suitable yielding material that rests on the curb 1 or curb plate 2. The closure sheet 4: is slightly cambered or crowned and is reinforced by correspondingly bent channels or I-beams 11 at regular intervals, whose end portions project slightly beyondthe side plates 6 and carry channel clamping beams 12. The latter are .secured to the ends of the beams 11 by bracket angles 13. Plates 1d at regular intervals together with the ends of the beams 11 act as spacers to maintain the members 12 at an interval from the plate 6, the spacers 14 being secured by suitable means to the inside of the member 12 and the outside of the plates 6. Holding plates 18 are secured on the upper flanges of the end portions ofthe beams 11 and extend over the members 12. Suitable bolts 15 anchored in any preferred manner to the curb 1, engage these holding plates, the flanges 16 of the channels 12 being notched to clear the bolts. Gross beams 17 of appropriate dimensions and arrangement are used to stiffen the structure at the end portions of the closure, and as indicated in Fig. 1, form supports for the clamping plates 14. Asa result of this arrangement of parts a closure is obtained that is readily secured firmly to the curb of a purifier or tank of large dimensions in such a way as to hermetically seal the latter. The arrangement of beams and clamping members stiffens the structure against internal pressure while the placing of the side members at an interval from the deck of the closure leaves scupper spaces from which melted snow, and ice readily drain.
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be made without departing fromthe spirit of my invention and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
l/Vhat I claim is 1. The combination with a receptacle'having anchor bolts, of a closure thereforhaving a crowned deck, depending side and end plates, a gasket projecting below the margin of the side and end plates, and supporting the closure on the tank, clamping beams secured around the closure at an in terval from the deck, and holding members on the beams engaged by the bolts.
2. The combination with a receptacle having a curb and anchor bolts, of a closure having a crowned deck, depending side and end plates forming a continuous flange for the deck, transverse beams on the deck, clamping beams secured on the ends of the beams, spacing plates secured to the inside of the clamping beams and the outside of the side plates whereby the clamping beams are at an interval from the deck, a gasket projecting below the margins of the side and end plates and resting on the curb, and holding plates engaged'by the anchor bo ts. 8. The combination with the curb of a gas purifier, of a closure therefor consisting 5 of a. crowned deck, having side and end plates that form an unbroken flange around the deck, a yielding gasket on the flange supporting the closure on the curb,.stifiening' h members across the deck clamping beams /'10 around. the deck, spacers securing the latter bolts on the curb engaging to the deck flange to form scupperspacc's, holding plates on the closure, and anchor the holding plates. r
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 15 in presence of tWo Witnesses.
