To all whom it may concern 2 I Be it known that 1, Cinemas SAGKET, a citizen of the United States, residing at: Livingston, in the county of Park and State of Montana, have invented eertain new and I useful Improvements in Automatic WVeirs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to automatic weirs which are designed to be disposed adjacent a stream of water and adapted to discharge j a constant amount of water irrespective of the rise or tall of the water in the stream.
An important obj-sot of this invention is 3 to provide an automatic weir oat the above character, which is simple inoonst-ruction and positive in its'operation.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of the above character, which is so constructed that the same may not be tampered with by improper parties.
Other objects and advantages :of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like par-ts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my weir, Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional "View through :the floating box struot'ure, Fig. 3 is a vertical central longitudinal sectional view of the weir, and, Fig. 4 is a plan view thereof, the
inclosing box-structure being shown in horizontal section.
In the drawings wherein is illustrated :a preferred :embodimentof my invention, the weir is shown :as comprising an inclosing box-structure 1, which is closed upon all sides except the top and upon the side thereof adjacent the stream. The side of this box-structure which is adjacent the stream is provided at its lower :end with an opening 2 for supplying the water into the boxstructure 1. The upper end or top of the box-structure 1 is closed by a swinging lid 3, which is hinged to (the ibQXeStTH'CtHIG, as shown at 4, and retained in its closed position by a lock or other suitable means (not shown).

This inner box-structure is rigidly mounted upon transverse beams 6, which are spaced from the bottom of the inclosing box-structure 1 and suitably connected therewith.

, A horizontally disposed discharge conduit 7 passes through the inclosing box-structure 1 and has communication with the lower end of the inner box-structure 5.
Surrounding the upper end portion of the inner box-structure 5 is a vertically movable float-box 8, which. is preferably provided upon opposite sides thereof with openings 9. This fioatbox may be formed of such material that it will'possess a desired buoyancy or the same may be provided with floats 10, which are suitably secured thereto. The float-110x 8 hasyits internal lower portion out out, as shown, forforming a shoulder 11, which engages the upper beveled end 12 of inner box .5 areeonnected by suitably flexifble water-proof material 13, having the upper edge thereof disposed within a slot 14 formed upon the inner box 5. A strip 15 is disposed within the slot 14; and clamps against the material 13 to hold the same against displacement. The lower edge of the material 13 is secured to the lower end of the float-box 11, the same being disposed between a strip 16 and said lower end. This strip is secured to the float-box in any suitable manner. The flexible material 13 extends abont the inner :hoX 5 upon all sides thereof. The float-box carries hooks 17 to which be secured suitable weights for the purpose of changing the buoyancy of the float-box.
In the operation of my weir, the same being disposed at the side of a stream, as shown in Fig. l, the water passes into the inclosing box-structure 1 through the openmg 2. As the buoyancy of the float-box 8 remains constant the same is submerged at a constant- :depth in the water. The water then flows through the openings 9 and passes into the inner box 5 to be discharged through the conduit 7. When the stream rises,,due to the tide or the like, the water in the inclosing box-structure 1 also rises. As the buoyancy of the float-box 8 remains constant, the rise of the water in the inclosing box-structure 1 causes said float-box 8 to rise. It will thus be seen that the discharge of water through the openings 9 into the the inner box 5. The float box 8 'and the inner box-structure 5 willremain constant. By changing the buoyancy of the float-box, as by securing suitable weights (not shown) to the hooks 17, the discharge of water through the openings 9 is changed in amount, but this new amount is retained constant irrespective of the rise and fall of the stream. The function of the flexible material 13 is to prevent any of the water passing upwardly between the float-box 8 and the box-structure 5. By securing the lid3 in its closed position the operation of theweir cannot be interfered with.
I wish it understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that certain changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the sub joined claims. I further wish it understood that the device may be constructed of such a material as is found suitable.

In a weir of the character described, a receptacle having its upper end formed open and its lower end closed and provided upon one side thereof near said lower end with discharge means, a float structure surrounding the upper portion of said receptacle to extend thereabove, said float structure having the lower portion thereof cut out internally to provide a shoulder adapted for engagement with the upper end of said receptacle, and means to prevent the passage of water between the lower portion of the float structure and said receptacle in an upward direction.

In a weir of the character described, an inclosing box-structure, a stationary boxstructure disposed therein, a float-box verorain tically movably mounted about the upper end of the stationary box-structure to extend upwardly beyond the same, said floatbox being provided with openings formed therethrough, and discharge means connected with said stationary bOXrSt-I'HC'IUIG and extending through the inclosing boxstructure. v

In a weir of the character described, an inclosing box-struoture, a stationary boxstructure disposed therein, a float-box vertically movably mounted about the upper end of the stationary box-structure and extending upwardly beyond the same, and discharge means connected with the lower portions of the stationary box-structure. v

In a weir of the character described, an inclosing box-structure, a stationary boxstructure disposed therein, and provided with discharge means extending through said inclosing box-structure, a float-box surrounding the upper end of the static-nary box-structure, and a section of flexible ma. terial having connections with the float-box and stationary box-structure tosprevent the passage of the water in an upward direction between the same.
6. In a weir of the character described, an outer casing provided near its lower end with inlet means, a receptacle disposed within the outer casing having its upper end formed open and the lower end closed, a discharge conduit connected with the lower end of the receptacle and extending through the outer casing, and a float structure surrounding the upperportion of said receptacle to extend above the same and having openings formed therein for supplying the water to said receptacle and permitting the upper end of the float structure to remain always above the water,
7. In a weir of the character described, a receptacle having its upper end formed open, a float structure surrounding the upper end of said receptacle and extending upwardly beyond the same, and a section of flexible material having connections with said receptacle and float structure to prevent the passage of water in an upward direction between the same.
