Be it vknown that I, CHARLES P. FUHR ivANN, a fcitizen of the United States, residing in-V Erie, in the county of Erie and State ofPennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Band Wire-Looping Machines, of which the following is a specification.
` My invention relates to improvements in machines for making wire looped sheet metal bands, such as are used for securing coverings on steam and other pipes.
The object of my invention is to provide a wire looping pipe band machine of a simdie coperating with the horn to partially bend and form` the loop about the horn, movable folders for .closing the ends of the partially formed wire loop about the horn and the band strip thereon, a band strip bender for turning the projecting end of the band 'strip about the folded ends of the wire loop, and a movable band strip closing or folding die for cooperating 'with the horn to close the turned end of the band strip about the Vwire loop andthus attach the same securely thereto.` y
My invention also consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices pan ticularly specied in the claims. y

ln the drawing, 1 represents the frame of the machine, which may be of any suitable form or construction, adapted to give support to the other parts, 2 the sheet metal band strip to which the wire loop 3 is to be attached, and4 the wire from which the wire loop is cut and formed. The wire 4 passes from a suitable reel, not shown, through a set of horizontally arranged wire straightening rolls 5, and a similar set of vertically arranged wire straightening rolls 6 and suitable guides 7 under the loop formF ing and band strip supporting horn 8 on the stationary frame of the machine, the wire being advanced intermittently by the movable wire feeder 9 the requisite length to form a Wire loop. The wire feeder 9 is preferably carried by a vibrating lever 10 and the wire is held stationary during the back stroke of the feeder by a movable gripper or wire holder 11, which co-perates with the stationary gripper or holder v12, and which is preferably operated by a lever 13. A stationary gage or stop 14 against which the front end of the wire abuts accurately regulates the length of wire to be cut for each wire loop 3. The wire loop is cut from the wire by a stationary cutter 15, cooperating with a movable cutter 16, preferably carried by or formed integral with the movable wire loop former die 17 'which has a groove 18 to receive the severed piece of wire, and which coperates with the band strip supporting and wire loop forming horn 8 to partially form the wire loopl or `bendthe ends 19 of the severed piece of wire 20 upward into the position y shown in Fig. 5 ofthe drawing, after which a pair of movable wire loop folders 21, 21, one on each side of the horn, move horizontally inward toward the horn and fold and close the ends off the Wire loop snugly down againstY moves upward, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 7 and turns the pr'ojeetinend 24 of the band strip upward into the positionv shoivn by Kilo'ttedv lines in Fig. 7L During this upward turning orv bending' o t' the proj eeting end of the band strip, the band strip is held snugly. against the horn bythe vyire loopr which, has previously been closed; ann against the hand strip and thas apnaies. te linnlv elainp. the banal. snip' te the hor-n.v this operation of the band strip handen. the banal strip teleline' er alanine die.

bender, a folder for completing the bend of the band-strip and operating after the bender, and Wire cutters adapted to out the Wire into lengths, substantially as specified. 5. In a machine of the classdescribed, in combination, Wire feeding means, Wire cutting means, a Wire-loop forming device, movable folders cooperating With said device for completing the Wire-loop after the same has been partially formed, a bandstrip bender operating to bend the end of a band around a portion of the Wire loop and a folder operating afterthe bender for completing the bend of the band-strip, substantially as specified. 6. In a machine of the class described, -in combination, a forming and supporting horn, a Wire feeder adapted to feed the Wire to a position adjacent said horn, Wire cutters, Wire-loop forming mechanism cooperating with said horn, Wire-loop folders,

7 In a machine of the class described, in combination, a' forming and supporting horn, means for feeding a Wire to a p0sition adjacent said horn, a gage for the end of the Wire to abut against, a Wire-loop former coperating With said horn, Wire- `loop folders, a band-strip bender, anda band-strip folder. i

In a machine of the class described, in combination, a forming and supporting horn, a Wire feeder adapted to feed the Wire toa position adjacent the horn, Wire cutting means, a Wire-loop former cooperating With said horn to form the Wire into a loop, Wireloop folders to complete the formation of the loop, a band-strip bender, a band-strip felder, and a gage for the end of the band strip toV abut against, to properly position the same before the bending and folding operations take place.
9. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a supporting and forming horn, means for forming a loop in a Wire cooperating With said horn, Wire-loop folders adapted to complete the formation of the loop, a band-strip bender coperating With said horn, aband-strip folder adapted to complete the bend in the band, a gage for the end of the band-strip to abut against, and a side 'guide for the band-strip.
