Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARENCE L. JENKINS, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TANNING LEATHER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 107,177, dated September 6, 1870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE L. JENKINS, of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented a certain Process of Tanning Leather, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, enabling those skilled in the art to practice the same.
For the purpose of liming the raw hides, say forty, take one (1) bushel of lime and one (1) pound of potash, upon which put sufiicient water to cover the hides by the liquor thus made. In this solution they must remain for from two to three days, according to circumstances, after which they are removed to undergo the hating process in a solution compounded of one (1) peek of stone lime and four (4) pounds of sulphur by boiling such ingredients in water, enough of the latter being added to make the desired quantity of liquor. After a period of one day or one day and a half the hides are taken out of the hating solution and transferred to the tanning-vat, which contains the tannin g compound. The latter is prepared from the following ingredients:
Take twenty (20) pounds terra japonica, five (5) pounds ofwood-acid, five (5) pounds of hops, ten (10) pounds of best sumac, to about ten (10) barrels of water, or enough "of the latter to cover the hides.
As I have found it to be desirable to subject the hides in the beginning ofthe tanning process to a solution somewhat weaker than the above will make, I prefer to take only about twothirds of the stated quantity of the ingredients above named to the required quantity of water, and add the remaining third as the operation progresses. Y
After the hides have been in this liquor for about fifteen days the tanning is completed, and, after drying, the leather may be finished in any approved manner.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The process of liming, hating, and tanning hides to make leather, by subjecting them sue cessively to the compounds herein described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GLARENOE L. JENKINS.
