Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 5, 1912. Serial No. 713,430.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that NELSON CLEMENT, late a citizen of the United- States and a resident of the city of Chicago, Illinois, did invent certain new and useful Improvements in Beds; and I, as administratrix of the estate of the said NELSON CLEMENT, do hereby declare that the following description of his said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheets of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has general reference to improvements in beds, particularly collapsible beds, and it consists, essentially, in the novel and peculiar combination of parts, and details of construction, as hereinafter first fully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings already referred to, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my newly invented bed. Fig. 2 is a transverse, vertical section in line 0 O of Fig. 1, taken in the direction of the arrow pointers. Fig. 3 is a similar section in the direction of the arrow pointers in line 1 1 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the straining or stretching frame collapsed, with the bed fabric folded over the same. Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken in the direction of the arrow pointers in line 2 2 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is an outline elevation of means for vibrating the bed when it is used as a childs cradle.
Like parts are designated by correspond ing letters or characters of reference in all the figures of the drawings.
The object of this invention is the production of a bed of the collapsible type which may be folded together to occupy but little space; a bed which is absolutely rigid when set up, and, which, when produced in smaller sizes will form a light, compact, and convenient childs cradle.
Another object is the production of an article of this class of high sanitary qualities, because of the ease with which the component parts may be taken apart and cleaned.
Briefly this invention comprises .a bed bot tom and sides formed from an integral piece of flexible or fibrous material, such as rubber, canvas, or other like materials, the lon- The upper, longitudinal edges of these sides are suspended from longitudinal supporting bars I) and c by means of a continuous bight or hem a formed along both of said edges, through which said bars 5 and 0 are passed, it being understood, however that any other means of fastening may be employed if desired. The free ends of aforesaid supporting bar 0 are passed through apertures located at or near the upper ends of upstanding, bed corner posts 1 and 2, which apertures are sufiiciently larger than the ends of the said supporting bar 0 to permit a free entrance and removal therefrom. The free ends of the bar 5 are supported in similar apertures located at or near the upper ends of like bed corner posts 3 and 4, of which the corner post 3 is located opposite post 1, in the same manner that post 4 is positioned opposite post 2, so that the opposing corner posts 1 and 3 and 2 and 4 form a rectangle in plan.
Between the corner posts 1 and 3, which I will term the head end of the bed, are movably fastened top and bottom head braces 5 and 6, respectively, of the bed bottom stretching frame D, Fig. 4, above mentioned. Between the foot corner posts 2 and 4 are similar movably fastened top and bottom braces 7 and 8, which are also a part of said stretching frame D.
The corner posts 1 and 3 of the head of the bed are held in rigid position with respect to each other by means of a long rod 9 passing transversely through the said corner posts and having at one end an enhen my invention is used as a childs cradle, I employ a rocking device E, Fig. 6, comprising a flat, blade spring 30 at the free ends of which are supported the corner posts of the head or foot of the bed, as the case may be. Said spring is fastened to a suitably shaped supporting block 31, and it is so proportioned that the slightest movement of the occupant of the cradle will set up a vibration in the spring and impart a rocking motion to the cradle.
In manufacturing my invention, various types of construction may be employed. The various parts excepting the rods 9 and 9 and the fabric may be produced from hard wood and finished as simply or ornately as desired. Or the parts may be made from tubing of the proper shape or diameter, and either japanned or plated to suit the demands of the trade.
In the foregoing I have described the preferred mode of carrying out my invention, but I wish it distinctly understood that many changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from said invention.
Having thus fully described this invention, I claim as new and desire to secure to the estate of the said NELSON CLEMENT by Letters Patent of the United States, the following 1. A bed comprising head and foot members and connecting means therefor, an integral piece of fabric forming the sides and bottom thereof, said fabric being supported from said connecting means, an independent fabric tensioning frame engaging said head and foot members, and said fabric, and adapted to maintain said fabric, in both sides and bottom thereof, in positive tension, and means for maintaining said tensioning frame in fixed position.
2. A bed comprising an integral piece of fabric forming the bottom and sides thereof, longitudinal supporting members at the upper edges of said sides, two pairs of corner posts, said members being removably fixed to said corner posts, and a collapsible fabric tensioning frame located between said posts and adapted to maintain a positive tension in said fabric.
3. A bed comprising an integral piece of fabric forming the bottom and sides thereof, longitudinal supporting members at the upper edges of said sides, two pairs of corner posts, said members being removably fixed to said corner posts, a collapsible fabric tensioning frame located between said posts and adapted to maintain a positive tension in said fabric, and means for retaining said tensioning frame in fixed vertical position.
4. A bed comprising an integral piece of fabric forming the bottom and sides, longitudinal supporting rods at the upper edges of said sides, pairs of head and foot corner posts supporting said longitudinal rods, transverse braces between said head and foot corner posts, rods connecting said braces, around which said fabric is draped to form said sides, and means located in said posts whereby said braces are held in rigid position.
5. A bed comprising an integral piece of fabric forming the bottom and sides, longitudinal supporting rods at the upper edges of said sides, pairs of head and foot corner posts supporting said longitudinal rods, collapsible transverse braces between said head and foot corner posts, rods connecting said braces, around which said fabric is draped to form said sides, and means located in said posts whereby said braces are held in rigid position.
6. A bed comprising head and foot members and connecting means therefor, an integral piece of fabric forming the sides and bottom thereof, said fabric being supported from said connecting means, an independent fabric tensioning frame engaging said head and foot members, and said fabric, and adapted to maintain said fabric, in both sides and bottom thereof, in positive tension, and means located in said head and foot members for maintaining said tensioning frame in fixed posit-ion.
7. A bed comprising head and foot members and connecting means therefor, an integral piece of fabric forming the sides and bottom thereof, said fabric being supported from said connecting means, an independent fabric tensioning frame engaging said head and foot members, and being vertically adjustable therein, and means for maintaining said tensioning frame and said head and foot members in fixed, positive relationship.
