GATE-OPERATING MECHANISM.
Application filed Septembe1'27, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, WILLIAM F. WELTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cumberland, in the county of Chaves and State of New Mexico, have invented new and useful Tmprovements in Gate-Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to mechanism.
The main object of my invention is to provide an improved mechanism of this kind to operate a gate from opposite sides, and such mechanism as can be operated without alighting from a vehicle.
Tn connection with said object, another ob ject of the invention is to provide means whereby the gate will be assisted by gravity in moving to an open position upon actuation of operating cables or ropes.
Still another object of the invention is to provide means to take up slack in the operating cables or ropes at all times.
@ther objects of the invent-ion will hereinafter appear from the description of the preferred embodiment of the invention, which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein V Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view on an enlarged scale illustrating the main parts of the operating mechanism.
Referring to the said drawings wherein like reference characters design ate like parts throughout the several views, 1 and 2 designate posts, the space between which is closed by a gate designated 3. Said gate may be of any approved construction, and as shown comprises a frame lmade of a suitable pipe or rod, and to which is secured suitable wires or rods as shown. Said gate is rigidly and preferably adjustable supported from a turnable rod 5 in a suitable manner, such as by brackets 6. Said brackets permit the gate to be adjustably supported at various heights so that it may be raised to freely pass over obstructions or to permit small stock or poultry to pass under the same while closed.
The rod 5 at its lower end rests in a socket of a bracket or keeper designated 7. At its upper end the rod 5 loosely passes through a plate portion 8 of a hinge plate member or lever 9. T0 the post 2 is secured a bracket 10 having a vertical pintle 11 thereon which gate operating Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 26,] 913. Serial No. 722,606.
extends loosely through the plate portion 8. The hinge plate member 9 is provided with spaced apart diverging arms 12 which terminate at their free end in bifurcated or other suitable guide portions 1-3 for ropes or cables 14. To the rod 5 above the plate portion 8, is rigidly fastened a bracket 15, to an arm of which provided with a suitable opening 18, are secured spiral or coil springs 16.
abutments for the gate upon the same being opened. At the top of each post 18 is suitably fastened a plate designated 19. On the plates 19 are secured suitable guides 20 through which the ropes 14 pass, and which guides 20 are arranged out of alinement with the portions 18.
The gate is provided with a latch member of a suitable construction. The one shown is of spring metal and designated 21 and passes through the pipe 4:, being secured thereto by means of rivets or the like 23. Post 1 has akeepcr 2 1 of a suitable construction, adapted to receive the latch 21. Suitable weights 25 are provided, one on the free end of each rope beyond the guide 20 therefor. On the post 18 may be provided catch members 26 of any desired construction, adapted to be engaged by the latch 21 when the gate is open, to more effectively secure the same in said position. The weights 25 serve as handles to facilitate the opening of the gate and are arranged in such position as to be grasped from a vehicle. It is obvious of course, that the gate may just as well be operated from the ground. The weights 25 take-up all slack in the cables 14 at all times.
The gate may be opened in either direction and when opened, abuts against the post 18 in its path and engages the catch 26 thereon. In order to open the gate, one of the ropes 14.- is operated by grasping the weight 25 and pulling the same. Upon pulling one of the ropes 14:, the hinge plate 9, due to its pivotal or loose connection on the rod 5 and pintle 11, will cause the gate to he shifted or tilted to such an extent as to cause the latch 21 to disengage the keeper 24. Said gate upon the keeper and latch being freed, and accordingly tilted laterally, will move to open position by gravity. During the actuation of the ropes the spring 16 connected adjacent the end of the rope being operated, will be stretched or expanded, which assists the gate in moving to open position upon being freed from the keeper. In order to close the gate it is merely necessary to actuate the cable lat opposite to the one operated to open the gate.
As I have described and illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention only,
it is to be understood that changes Within the details of construction thereof may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims, and such changes are accordingly reserved by me.
Having thus described my said invention,:
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, a pivoted rod,
gate to gravitate between open and closed position, spring means connecting the said rod and lever means, and means operable from a distance for actuating the lever means.
2. In a device of the class described, a rod,
a gate carried by said rod, lever means for tiltlng the rod and causing the sides of said gate connected to said controlling member.
4. In a device of the class described, a gate controlling member, a pivot member therefor, a rod extending loosely through said controlling member, a gate supported from said rod, springs secured to said rod, said springs also secured to opposite sides of said controlling member, and flexible members connected to said controlling member.
5. In a device of the class described, a gate controlling member, a pivot member therefor, a rod loosely extending through said controlling member, a gate supported from said rod, said controlling member provided with spaced apart arms, springs, one connected to each of said arms and both connected to said rod, flexible members connected to each arm, abutment means for said flexible members at the free end of each arm, said flexible members extending on opposite sides of the gate, and guide means for each flexible member.
6. In a device of the class described, a gate controlling member having spaced apart arms, a post, a pivot member for said controlling member secured to said post, a rod, means on said post supporting said rod, said rod loosely extending through said controlling member, a gate supported from said rod, a bracket rigidly attached to said rod, springs, one attached to each arm of the controlling member and both attached to said bracket, flexible members secured to the arms of the controlling member, said arms terminating at their free end in guides for the flexible members, posts, one on opposite sides of the gate, a guide member on each of said posts, each guide member receiving one of said flexible members, and each flexible member having a Weight at its free end.
