To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL J. Bnonnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spool-Brakes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to braking devices for spools, bobbins, etc., and is designed to provide a friction brake for such articles whereby the wire, cord or other material be ing unwound therefrom is kept under more or less tension. Such a braking device is particularly useful in the bookbinding art wherein binding wire is fed from a spool or bobbin. By employing such a braking device, the wire is prevented from buckling, etc., so that the binding operation is greatly facilitated and imperfect results obviated. The present invention provides means for regulating the friction and, therefore, the tension so that different conditions may be met. These and other advantages will be more clearly seen from the detailed specification following taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part thereof and illustrating a preferable embodiment of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in end elevation of a spool and its spindle equipped with the friction brake of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation of the part shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary View in elevation of the spindle of the spool. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the spoolattached friction plate. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of said plate.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates a stationary spindle having its outer end threaded as at 2 and provided with a groove 3 therein. A spool or bobbin 4 is rotatably mounted on the spindle, this spool in practice containing Wire or other material which is to be unwound therefrom. Ametal plate 5 forming a friction member is centrally apertured to fit freely over the end of the spindle 1 and is provided with a plurality of arms 5 from which arms, prongs 6 extend inwardly. These prongs enable the metal plate to be secured to the side-of a wooden spool so that the plate is securely attached to and rotates with the spool. This form of se curing means may be varied to suit different conditions, such, for instance, as the employment of metal spools, as will be obvious.
Loosely connected with this friction plate 5, as by a sleeve 8 having its ends upset, is a second friction member in the form of a. disk 7. This friction disk 7 is provided with a key 9 seating in the groove 3 of the spindle and serving to hold this friction disk stationary relatively to the spool at. A clamping nut 10 engages with the threaded end of the spindle 2 and with the friction disk 7 and is adapted to adjustably press the friction disk 7 against the friction plate 5 so that as the spool 4 and friction plate 5 rotate, the face of the friction disk 7 pressing against the friction plate 5 will exert a braking effect, the force of which may be regulated at will by varying the pressure of the clamping nut 10 against the friction disk 7. In order to maintain the clamping nut 10 in its adjusted position, a lock nut 11 is prefer ably employed.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a friction brake for spools and the like, by means of which the amount of frictional braking force may be varied at will to suit different conditions.
While I have herein described and shown a specific embodiment of my invention, I desire it understood that various structural changes are possible therein within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
VVhat I claim, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, in combination with a spindle having a spool or bobbin rotatably mounted thereon and having a threaded portion, a sleeve movable longitudinally of said spindle and provided with means cooperating therewith to prevent relative rotation, a friction plate apertured to fit over said spindle and provided with outwardly extending means of attachment to said spool, said plate being loosely carried by and retained on said sleeve and said sleeve being provided with a friction face movable relative to and into frictional engagement with said plate, and a clamping nut cooperating with the threaded portion of said spindle and adapted to be operated to engage said sleeve to move its friction face into operative frictional engagement with said plate.
