To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES A. SCI-IO- FIELD and CHARLEs F. MILLER, citizens of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Consumers, of which the following is a specification.
Our said invention relates to a smoke consuming apparatus for use in connection with locomotive and other fire-boxes, and consists in an improved form and arrangen'ient of an attachment by the use of which steam and air may be mixed and forced into the fire-box above the fire where it will mix with the smoke and gases to render them com bustible, the steam being taken from the steam dome to operate the apparatus, the front end of the lire-box protected and other advantages secured, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a sectional view of the front end of a locomotive boiler having our attachment thereon, Fig. 2 a top or plan view of the same, Fig. 3 a perspective view of the hollow injector, and Fig. 4 a vertical section through the same.
Except for the air and steam feeding and mixing apparatus the parts shown may be like parts of any locomotive, or furnace, wherein the fire-box A is provided with grate bars a under which is the ash pan A and in the front of which is the door opening a through which the fuel is supplied to the fire.
The air and steam feeding nozzle B is hollow and fan-shaped. .Tt extends from the top of door opening a upward adjacent to the front end of the fire-box on its inside spreading out until at its upper end it is of a width to extend across the central portion of the fire-box and terminates in a horizontal section I) projecting rearward for a short distance above the normal height of the fire. The lower end terminates in a horizontal neck I) which extends out through the front of the fire-box just at the top of the door opening a. A. steam pipe 10 leads from the steam dome 11, on the top of the boiler and connects with said neck, or one branch of a Y connected with said neck. Another pipe 12 leads from a blower casing 18, mounted on the running board, the side of the boiler, cab, or any other convenient place and connects with the outer end of said neck. Another casing 14, of smaller diameter, is mounted alongside casing 13 and contains a rotary piston which is driven by a steam jet coming through a branch pipe 15 from pipe 10. The shaft of the rotary piston extends through the blower casing 13 and carries the blower, which. is thus driven to force air through pipe 12 into the furnace. The exhaust steam from casing 14 passes through the pipe 16 into pipe 12 and mixes with the air drawn in from the outside, which is further mixed in the hollow nozzle B with the live steam coming from pipe 10 and is forced out through the wide narrow opening in the horizontal section b of said nozzle to mix with the smoke A above the fire. A valve 17 is provided in the pipe 10 whereby the steam supply may be regulated. Said valve being operated by a rod 19 which extends forward to the front of the furnace and is then provided with a hand Wheel in convenient position for use.
The blower in casing 13 and rotary piston in casing 14 are of any form found appropriate and need no further illustration or description.
In operation, the steam supply under control of the valve 17 is allowed to flow from the steam dome 11 into the pipes 10, that going through branch 15 driving the rotary piston in the casing 14 and the blower in casing 13, which blower draws in the air from the outside and drives it with the exhaust steam coming from the casing 14 through pipe 16, through pipe 12 and joins with the steam coming through pipe 10 at the connection with the horizontal neck Z) of the nozzle B. Said nozzle B is of cast iron and is formed to extend up inside of the fire-box adjacent to its front end and being hollow and, at its upper end, extending out over the fire, serves as a further protection against the burning out of this section of the fire-box and the parts therein. The supply of steam and air can be readily controlled so as to furnish the amount necessary for a mixture to secure the best degree of combustion and the greatest economy of steam.
It will be noticed that the horizontal discharge end 6 of nozzle B is turned to discharge downward at a slight angle, a preferred form but not necessary.

protect a considerable portion of its front end and formed with a wide horizontal rearwardly extending section extending substantially across said fire-box above the fire and formed with a transverse discharge slot extending from side to side and adapted to discharge over the top of the fire, steam and air pipes connected with the neck of said nozzle which extends through the front end of said fire-box, a blower connected with one of said pipes, and a steam pipe leading from the steam dome to supply steam to drive said blow-er, substantially as set forth.

The combination with a fire-box of a wide flat hollow nozzle mounted therein adjacent to and covering a large part of the upper portion of its front end and extending upward and rearwardly wit-h a horizontal section having a narrow transverse opening adapted to discharge a thin sheet of mixture over the top of the fire, a steam pipe connected with said nozzle and with a steam dome, another steam and air pipe connected with a blower, said blower, a rotary piston on the shaft of said blower, a steam pipe leading to the casing of said rotary piston, and an exhaust pipe leading from said casing into the pipe leading from the blower casing, substantially as set forth.
