UNITED STATES HOWARD G. BECK, 0F YALE, IOWA.
BAG-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aut 19,1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD Gr. BECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yale, in the county of Guthrie and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Bag-Fastener; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appersion of serrations or teeth upon the opposite edges of the slot or on the tongues, in order to insure against the slipping of the draw string of the bag.
In practical fields the details of construction of the fastener or clasp may necessitate alterations, to which the patentee is entitled, provided the alterations fall within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a view, showing a bag or the like including a draw string, to which the improved fastener or clasp is applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the fastener orclasp detached, however, showing a string clasped. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a fastener showing the serrations or teeth eliminated.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 1 designates the usual form of bag, the open or mouth end of which, designated by the numeral 2, is gathered by the usual draw string 3.
The improved fastener or clasp consists of a spring steel plate, each end of which is rolled or bent upon itself as shown at 6, which bent portions 7 are formed into points passing through the fabric of, the bag, for fastening or attaching the clasp to the bag, as shown in Fig. 3, said points are designed by the numeral 8. The fastener or clasp 5 is slightly curved on the arc of a circle, and is provided with a slot 9, at each end of which a spring tongue is constructed integrally with the plate. These tongues 10 are slightly curved or arched as shown at 11, so as to receive the draw string as shown in the drawings. The free ends of the tongues 10 extend into slot, and are rounded as indicated at 12, to prevent the tongues from catching in foreign objects.
The opposite edges of the tongues and the opposite longitudinal edges of the slot are provided with serrations or teeth 12 and 13, adapted to engage the draw string, to render the securing of the same more eflicient.
To fasten the draw strings of the bag, after the mouth or open end of the bag has been properly gathered, the tongues are slightly raised, and the draw string placed thereunder, the tongues being constructed of resilient metal, spring back in place, thereby holding the draw string securely in a zig-zag contour, the teeth acting to hold the string more secure.
The corners 14- of the plate are rounded, to prevent their catching in foreign objects.
It will be ascertained from the foregoing, there has been devised an exceedingly novel, simple, improved and efficient fastener or clasp, and one which has been found particularly desirable and practical, owing to its efficient adaptability to mail sacks, shopping bags, as well as all other types of bags, such as grain bags and the like.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In a fastener for a draw string, a spring steel plate having means adapted for fastening the plate to a bag, said plate having an elongated slot, opposed spring tongues, one projecting from each end of the slot and forming an integral part of the plate and extending into the slot and alined therewith to grip the draw string between the opposite edges of the tongue and the opposite edges of the slot, each tongue having an arched or bulged portion transversely thereof to receive the draw string, the opposite edges of each tongue and the opposite longitudinal edges of the slot having serrations to grip the draw string more secure.
2. In a fastener for a draw string, a spring steel plate having means adapted for fastening the plate to a bag, said plate having an elongated slot, a spring tongue projecting from each end of the slot forming an integral part of the plate and adapted In testimony whereof I have signed my to extend into the slot and alined therewith name to this specification in the presence of 10 ta grip tfheldraw string bgtween the opposite two subscribing Witnesses.
e ges 0 tie ton he an the ed es of the a slot, the opposite edges of each t%ngue and HOWARD BECK' the opposite longitudinal edges of the slot Witnesses:
having serrations, to grip the draw string R. E. OAsLow,
more securely. W. LEE Down.
