FERNAND O. GUESDON, OF VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA.
WRENGH.
Application filed September 26, 191
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, FERNAND O. GUnsDoN, a citizen of France, residing at Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wrenches.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a wrench in which a screw operated means for adjusting the movable jaw is dispensed with and which at the same time may be easily and quickly adjusted to the desired work.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a wrench which includes means whereby the strains exerted upon the wrench during operation will intensify the locking engagement between the fixed and movable jaws in proportion to the intensity of such strains.
\Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the parts in the position necessary to permit free adjustment of the movable jaw away from the fixed jaw. Fig. 3 an end view of the wrench. Fig. 4: a section 011 the line 4t 1 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 a section on the line 55 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 6 a section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 a section on the line 77 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates the shank of the wrench one end of which terminates in a handle 11 while the other end thereof terminates in a fixed jaw 12. Encircling the shank 10 and secured thereto in any suitable manner is a ring or collar 13 a portion of which extends a considerable distance beyond one edge of the shank to form an eye member.

jaw 12 and having its arms disposed at their free ends in embracing relation to said jaw is a U-shaped member 14. This member extends beyond the same edge of the shank 10 as the collar 13 and slidably disposed in said collar and U-shaped member is the shank 15 of a movable jaw 16 whereby said movable jaw may be adjusted toward and away from the fixed jaw 12. The shank 15 of the movable is provided on each side at its outer edge wit-h laterally directed flanges 1"? and 18 for a purpose that will presently appear. Corresponding V- shaped recesses 19 and 20 are formed-in the sides of the fixed jaw 12 the apex of said recesses being disposed outwardly. Rotatably mounted in the fixed jaw 12 at the apex of the recesses 19 and 2 is a shaft 21 which has fixed on its ends and movable in the recesses 19 and 20 respectively arms 22 and 23. The arms 22 and 23 are of such length that when the shaft 21 is rotated to move the free ends of said arms toward the movable jaw said free ends will frictionally engage the flanges 17 and 18 respectively and lock the movable jaw' 16 against movement away from the fixed jaw 12 as will be apparent. The free ends of the arms 22 and 23 are normally forced into engagement with the flanges 17 and 18 respectively by means of leaf springs 2e and 25 mounted upon respective sides of the fixed jaw 12.
By this construction it will be apparent that by moving the arms 22 and 23 inwardly of the fixed jaw 12 it will permit of the movable jaw being adjusted freely away from the fixed jaw. After the desired ad justment is had the arms 22 and 23 are released to the influence of the springs 24 and 25 and the free ends of said arms will then move into engagement with the flanges 17 and 18. With the arms 22 and 23 in this po sition any tendency of the movable jaw 16 to move away from the fixed jaw 12 will in tensify the engagement between the arms 22 and 23 and the flanges 17 and 18 and lock said movable jaw against such movement. As the arms 22 and 23 are inclined rearwardly or away from the movable jaw 16 at all times it will be apparent that said arms will in no way interfere with the adjustment of the movable jaw 16 toward the fixed jaw 12.
Vhat I claim is A wrench comprising a shank having one end terminating in a handle and the other end in a fixed jaw, alined eye members at one edge of the shank, a movable jaw having 5 whereby said movable jaw is locked against movement away from the fixed aw and a leaf spring anchored in each recess and engaging w its the adj cent arm to move the =ee end or the latter into en agea respectiv iiange. n1 testimony whereof, aiiix my s1gnatnre, in presence of two witnesses.
