NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that. I, IVILLIAM SCOTT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Central Nyack, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to that class of valves for bottles permitting the outflow of fluid therefrom, but preventing refilling 'thereof My improvements in brief comprise an obstruction member placed in a bottle neck, or within a sleeve therein, said obstruction member having fluid channels, but being incapable of penetration by a wire; together with a pair of hemi-spheres whose convex surfaces are in opposed relation, said hemispheres being loosely retained between the obstruction member and a lower flange or seat. In the drawing accompanying this application, Figure l is a vertical section of a bottle neck portion with my improved non-filling device fitted therein. Fig. 2 is a view of the same as tilted for outpouring; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l; Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the obstruction member, and Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the upper valve member.
In the figures I have shown a sleeve a as containing my improved valve mechanism, said sleeve being fitted within the neck Z) of a bottle. But, obviously, said sleeve may be dispensed with, and the valve parts directly contained within the bottle neck.
Fitting within the upper portion of sleeve a is what I term an obstruction member, which is composed of the head portion c', body portion Z and foot portion e, the portions c and Z having an annular, separating groove f and the portions (Z and e having an annular, separating groove g.
The head portion c has an annular flange 7L. by which the obstruction member rests upon the upper edge of sleeve a. The head portion c is penetrated vertically by four, equidistant, radial holes i; the body portion Z has four equidistant, radial, vertical slots j, and the foot portion e has four equidis' tant, radial, vert-ical slots 7c. The holes z' and slots 7n are in alinernent, but are separated by solid parts of the body portion d, because the slots j are in different vertical planes.

ment of holes and slots in the obstruction member is that a wire or the like, introduced through one of the holes z' will not readily enter a slot j, but will be stopped by a solid part of body port-ion (l. If the wire with careful working should be caused to enter a slot j, then it would be positively checked against any further passage through the obstruction member by striking against a solid part of foot portion e. Thusthe obstructionmember, while permitting fluid flow through its slots and holes, is impervious to the passage of an interfering wire or the like. It therefore forms a valve protector, and is disposed in the bottle neck above the valve. The under surface of the foot portion e serves as an open valve seat, when the bottle is tipped to pour out the fluid, and said under surface has the crossed grooves Z, merging into the slots k, to facilitate the flow.
The valve comprises two heini-spherical bodies, m and n, the body m, when the bottle is upright, lying with its plan-e surface on seat o in sleeve a, or in the bottle neck; and the body n lying with its convex surface upon the convex surface of said body m. The body n has a central orifice y), whoseV circular edge at the convex side of body n allows said body to seat centrally upon the convex surface of body m. Said body n also has peripheral slots (I which merge into transverse slots on the plane surface of body n, and allow the passage of fluid from the bottle when the latter is tilted. The space between seat o and the under surface of foot portion e of the obstruction device is sullicient to allow movement of the heini-spherical bodies m and a in unseating the valve and permitting the passage of fluid when the bottle is tilted in pouring out the contents, but said space is insuiiicient to permit said bodies m and n to change from their relative operative positions.
In practice, a bottle equipped with my improved valve and obstruction device, cannot be refilled, for if the neck be filled with fluid, above the valve, and the bottle be shaken, the valve will not allow the entry of the fluid within the bottle. Also by reason of the obstruction device it is not possible with wires to tamper with the valve. On the other' hand, when tipping the bottle to pour out the contents, the valve opens and permits free passage of the fluid.
I claim:-
A bottle having an annular shoulder in its neck, a valve-seat engaging said shoulder and having an opening, an obstruction device formed with staggered openings arranged above the valve-seat, a plurality of non-buoyant hemispherioal valve members arranged between the valve-seat and obstruction device, one of said members being solid and the other formed With an opening, said valve members having their rounded surfaces in Contact at all times, With the flat side of the solid member normally forming a valve for the opening in the valveseat and the lat surface of the other member cooperating With the obstruction member in the pouring operation, the last-mentioned member serving to limit the opening movement of the solid member.
