Specification of Letters Patent;
Patented July 2'9, 1913.
Application'filed August 5, 1912: seriailvo. 713,291.
TouZZio/iom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, THEODORE E. CRE- oniiius, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Mis- SOt1ll,l121V6 invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening-Clips for Wings or Leaves for Display-Racks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
Heretofore, inthe manufacture or production of display wings or leaves embodying or comprising an outer metallic frame provided with suitable pivots or trunnions whereby the finished Wing may be swingably mounted in any suitable main frame, and a pa-nel usually in the form either of a solid wood filling or body-portion arranged within, and coveringthe area, of the outer metallic frame and upon which the articles of merchandise or the like to be displayed orexhibited are attached or fixed in any suitable manner or by any suitable means, or of a skeleton wooden-frame filling, such as shown in United States Letters Patent No. 9 l8,82l,granted to Louis Feldma-nn, J12, on December 21, 1909, particularly adapted for the display or exhibition of wall-paper and analogous articles and which skeleton frames it is especially desirable shall be easily and quickly removable from their outer frames so as to be readily and conveniently interchanged or replaced by others bearing different kinds or styles of wall-paper, the panel or wing-filling has generally been secured to and within the outer frame by means of screws or other similar fastening means passed laterally through the members of the outer frame and into the filler or inner body at its side edges. This practice, however, not only adds considerably to the actual cost of, but consumes a large amount of time and labor in the, production of such wings and is hence more or less objectionable, for such practice necessitates numerous borings of the metallic out-er frame members to accommodate, or permit the ready passage therethrough of, said screws or other fastening means, requires nicety of and exact adjustment or placement of the filling body within the outer frame, it being required, in order that the finished wing shall present a neat and its opposite display faces shall be either flush with, or on planes parallel with, the
opposite side or surface planes of the outer frame, and in many instances has caused'the display surfaces of the filling bodies to become impaired, the filling bodies splitting or bulgingon the passing or forcing thereintoof said securing screws-often to such an extent as to require the entire discarding of such bodies, resulting in a consequent waste or loss of material.
The objectsof my invention are to obviate such objectionable practice and to cheapen the cost of, and lessen the amount of time and labor required, and do away or pre vent loss or waste of material, in the, production particularly of display wings or leaves of the kind stated, and, to that end, to providea simple and comparatively inexpensive means whereby the filling bodies of wings or leaves of the class described may be, without any liability of injury thereto, orjimpairment of thedisplay surfaces thereof, readily, easily, andconveniently fastened or secured, at the same time neatly centered, and afterward firmly held, in proper display position within the outer frame, the finished wing or leaf presenting a neat and attractive appearance.
lVith these objects and purposes in view, my invention resides in thcnovel construction and combination of the several parts of my'new' fastening or securing means and in the novel arrangement and combination of the same in and with a wing or leaf of the kind stated, all as will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the cla ms.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an elevational view of a display-rack or supporting standard showing a plurality of wings or leaves embodying my invention operatively mounted and arranged thereupon; Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary elevational view showing one side of a portion or corner of a display wing or leaf, partly broken away, embodying my invention; Fig.
3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the reverse slde of said wing or leaf portion or corner; Fig. 4 is a detail transverse or horizontal sectional vlew on the line 4%,
Fig. 2, showing a portion of the outer frame and of the filling body of a wing with the members of my new fastening means or clip in assembled body-engaging position; Fig. 5 is a view of the parts of a wing shown in Fig. 4:, including the members of my new clip, ready for assembling; Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 6-6, Fig. 4, looking in the direction of the arrow; Fig. 7 is a similar view on the line 7-7, Fig. 4:, looking in the direction of the arrow; Fig. 8 is a similar view on the line S-8, Fig. 4:; Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the cooperating members of the preferred form of my new fastening means or clip; Fig. 10 is an enlarged fragmentary elevational view showing one side of a portion or corner of a display-wing or leaf, partly broken away, embodying a modified form of my invention; Fig. 11 is a sectional view on the line 1111, Fig. 10; Fig. 12 is a sectional view on the line 12-12, Fig. 11; Fig. 13 is a view similar to Fig. 10, but showing the reverse side of said wing or leaf portion; and Fig. 14: is a perspective view of the cooperating members of the modified form of my new fastening means or clip.
As shown particularly in Figs. 1 to 9,
both inclusive, of said drawings, my new wing in one form, which we will, for convenience of description, call the preferred form, embodies an outer preferably rectangular frame A, a panel or filling-body B,
' and my new two-part clip or fastening means comprising cooperating or complementing and normally separable members C and D adapted to interlock with each other and engage with body or panel B on opposite sides thereof and thereby operatively hold the same firmly and rigidly and properly centered within frame A.
Outer frame A is made up of or comprises upright or vertically-disposed preferably hollow metallic rods or bars 1-1 of suitable size and diameter and horizontally-disposed or cross-members 2-2 likewise pref eraoly hollow metallic rods or bars of cor responding size and diameter rigidly united or held together in any suitable manner, preferably by electric welding. The finished wings or leaves are preferably swingably or pivotally mounted in any suitable supporting standard or rack S provided with alining upper and lower parallel members or bars S and S, respectively, and, accordingly, inner upright frame member 1 is suitably provided at its opposite ends with pivot extensions or trunnions 33' adapted to pivotally engage, respectively, with said cross-members S and S of rack or frame S. Preferably pivot 3 is some what longer than pivot 3, pivot 8' being adapted to rest or seat in a recess or the like provided in said lower cross bar or member S of standard S and said pivot 3 being adapted to be inserted into and extend through a perforation in upper cross bar or member S of standard S, whereby the finished wing may be easily removed from, or placed into, operative position in said standard, as will be readily understood. It may be here stated, however, that, while I prefer to so swingably or pivotally mount display-wings or leaves embodying my new fastening means, such wings or leaves may be otherwise or fixedly mounted, and that while I have heretofore used or employed, and have shown and will describe herein, my new fastening means or clip in connection with display-wings or leaves, and for which use my new fastening means or clip is especially designed and adapted, it may be equally well otherwise employed and for different purposes or in connection with other articles.
VVing-filling B is preferably in the form of a solid wood panel of suchsize relatively to the size of frame A as to fit neatly within, and cover the entire area of, frame A and preferably of such thickness relatively to the diameter of the tubular or hollow members of frame A as to lie within frame A, when properly centered therein, with its opposite side or display surfaces substantially or approximately flush with, or slightly within, the opposite surface planes of said frame. In use, the articles of merchandise and the like to be displayed or exhibited are hung or otherwise suit-ably mounted or secured upon this filling or panel B, and in order'to provide an attractive back-ground for the articles so exhibited or displayed, filling or panel B is preferably covered on both its side or display surfaces with preferably colored burlap or other suitable fabric B.
As shown particularly in Fig. 9, my new fastening means or clip for holding this filling or panel B firmly and rigidly \ithin frame A is in two parts and comprises, as before stated, the two cooperating and complementing members G and D of any suitable, preferably thin, but strong, metallic material.
Member C of my new clip or fastening means is substantially L-shaped and integrally comprises a back portion or long leg at of suitable length corresponding to the thickness of wing-filling B and to the outer diameter of the members of frame A and of any suitable width inturned at its opposite side edges to provide forwardly presented portions or retaining-flanges 5 5 for the long leg of member D, as hereinafter more fully appearing, and a short leg or portion 6 projecting, forwardly from the upper edge of, and at right angles to, portion a and integrally provided at its outer edge with a pair of inwardly bent spaced apart depending (reference being had to Fig. 9) angular or sharpened teeth or prongs 7 and at its rear end centrally and preferably rectangularly cut away to provide a. rectangular opening, as at 8, the rear edge of said opening 8 beingflush with the outer face of portion 4: and the upper edge of portion 4 within the area of said opening being cut away so as to be finshwith the under face of portion 6, for purposes soon to appear.
Member D of my new clipor fastening means is alsosubstant-ially L-shaped and integially comprises a long leg or back por tion 9 of a length corresponding to the length of long leg or back portion 4 of mem ber C and of a width relatively to the width (rf'said portion 4 ofmember C as to neatly fit between flanges -'-5 of said portion 4 of member C and to ride or slide smoothly upon said po-rtio-na when said members are being forced together, as will shortly ap= pear, and a short leg or portion 10 projecting forwardly from the lower edge of, and at right angles to, portion 9 and integrally provided at its outer edge with a pair of inwardly bent spaced apart angular or sharpened teeth or prongs 11ll having their pointed ends presented upwardly, (reference being had to Fig. said portion 9 being cut away adjacent its upper end and oneach of its opposite sides, as at 12'-'--12, to provide a central rectangular extension or projection 13 adapted to fit in and extend through said opening 8 when said members C and Dare endwise' forced together and into engagement with wing-filling B. This projection 18 of member I) is of such length, that, when the teeth 7 and 11 of said members C and D are in engagement with panel B, it will project some little distance beyond the outer face of said portion 6.
The members C of my new clips or fasteningmeans are adapted'to be rigidly fixed at their long legs or portions 4: preferably by electric spot welding, as shown particularly in Figs. 4:, 5, 6, and 8, to, and on the inner side of, the members of. metallic outer frame A with their short legs or portions 6 presented inwardly anddispose'd on a plane substantially or approximately flush with, or slightly within, the surface plane of said frame. that a frame A will be provided with any suitable or required number of said members G with the same properly spaced apart around the frame as shown in Fig. 1. Zingfilling or panel B is now placed within frame A with the edges of one side or display surface thereof resting upon the teeth 7 of said member C. Members D are now placed in cooperative posit-ion relatively to said members C with their respective long legs or portions 9 fitted between the flanges 5 5 of the respective portions 4 of said members C and their said respective extensions or projections 13 presented toward It will, of course, be understood said respective openings 8, after which, by or through the use of a suitable tool, said respective portions 9 of members D are endwise forced to ride inwardly upon said respective portions 4 of members C, the said flanges 5--5 of each member C serving to guide andretain its cooperating or complementingfmember D in proper operative po sitiOn, and prevent sidewise movement thereof, relatively to its respective member C. This movement of members D carries their said extensions or projections 13 into and through said openings 8 and forces the teeth 7 and 11 of said respective members G andDto bite into and engage with said wingfilling B at its opposite side or display surfaces, after which the portions of said projections 13 extending out beyond the outer face of portions 6 of said members C are suitably clenched or bent out 'ardly to lie substantially or approximately flush with the outer face of said portions 6 and to engage with the upper end of the portions at of said members C, whereby, as will be clear, the members of my new fastening means or clip are locked in engagement with each other and the filling or panel B firmly and rigidly held in proper display position within frame A.
By the use of my new fastening clips, the cost of production of such display-wings or leaves is reduced, a large saving of labor and material is effected, all borings of the metallic menibersof frame A are done away with, there is no liability of the display surfaces of filling or panel B becoming impaired, the filling body or panel B is automatically, so to speak, properly centered within, and with its side or display surfaces parallel or flush with the surface planes of, frame A, and the filling body or panel B is neatly, firmly, and attractively held in proper position within its outer frame A.
In Figs. 10, ll, 12, 13, and let, I have shown a slightly modified form of wing and of my new fastening clips. In this form, the display wing or leaf comprisesan outer frame E, which is similar in all respects to frame A hereinbefore described, a fillingbody or panel F, and my new two-part clip or fastening means comprising cooperating or complementing members G and H adapted to releasab-ly interlock with each other and to engage with panel F on its opposite side or display surfaces and thereby operative ly hold the same firmly and rigidly, but removably, in display position in outer frame E. This wing-filling or panel F comprises merely a skeleton frame F of wood or other suitable material and of corresponding size to fit neatly within the area of frame E, frame F being covered on both its side or display surfaces with cotton or other light fabric F This filling or panel F, as in said mentioned Letters Patent No. 943,821
fully described, is especially adapted for the display of wall paper and should, therefore, be readily removable from its outer frame E and interchangeable therein with similar frames displaying or exhibiting different styles or kinds of wall paper. To that end, member G of this fonn of my new clip is centrally provided adjacent its upper end, reference being had to Fig. H, with a small preferably circular opening orindennation, as at 14, member G being otherwise similar to said member C of the preferred form of my new clip and adapted to be similarly fixed on or to the members of outer frame E. Member H is correspondingly depressed to provide a projection, as at- 15, adapted, on members G and H being endwise forced together and into engagement with panel F, to spring into said opening or indentation l4 and thereby releasably lock said members together, the projection 16 of member H being only of such a length that, when said members H and G are in engagement, the outer edge thereof will be flush with the outer face of portion 17 of member G. Otherwose member H is similar to said clip-member D, and hence further description here of said clip members G and H is deemed unnecessary. It will be apparent that, the end or point of a suitable tool T being placed in engagement with the edge of extension 16 of member H appearing through the opening therefor in portion 17 of member G and suificient force or pressure being applied thereto, members G and H will be readily separated and forced out of locking engagement with each other, when a particular panel F may be removed from its outer frame E and quickly and easily replaced or interchanged by a second panel.
I am aware that minor changes in the construction and combination of the several parts of my new fastening clips and in the arrangement and combination of the same with a display wing or leaf or other article may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invent-ion, what I claim and desire to Secure by Letters Pat ent is: j
1. In a fastening clip of the class described, a substantially L-shaped member integrally comprising a long leg, a short leg provided with an opening, and inwardly presented teeth on said short leg extending substantially parallel with said long leg, and a second substantially L-shaped member also integrally comprising a long leg, a short leg, inwardly presented teeth on said short leg extending substantially parallel with said long leg, and a projection on said long leg adapted to fit in said opening, the long legs of said members being endwise movable relatively to each other into workengaging position and the teeth of said members being adapted to engage the work therebetween and on opposite side faces thereof; substantially as described.
2. In a fastening clip of the class described, a substantially L-shaped member integrally comprising a long leg provided at its side edges with inturned flanges, a short leg provided with an opening adjacent said long leg, and inwardly presented teeth on said short leg extending substantially parallel with said long leg, and a second substantially L-shaped member also integrally comprising a long leg adapted to fit between said flanges, a short leg, inwardly presented teeth on said short leg extending substantially parallel with said long leg, and an extension on said long leg adapted to fit in said opening, the long legs of said members being endwise movable relatively to each other into work-engaging position with the long leg of said second member fitting between said fianges and the teeth of said members being adapted to engage the work t-herebetween and on opposite faces thereof; substantially as described.
In witness whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
