To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that l. SYDNEY S. WEIL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have in vented a new and useful Pressure Expansion Safety Venting Device for Volatile Liquid Containers, of which the following is a description.
This invention relates to means for venting drums, cans and other receptacles, in such a way that the explosion'of their contents, when of an inflammable nature is absolutely prevented, when said receptacle is subjected to flame orexcessive heat.
I accomplish the object sought by the combination and construction of parts hereinafter described.
lln the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, Figure 1 shows a vertical central sectional View, Fig. 2 shows an elevational view, and Fig. 3 shows a detailed central sectional View of the method of securing the perforated plate or screen, for permitting the escape of vapors, and also preventing back-fire. Fig. 4 shows a plan view of the device.
5 is used to designate the container for volatile liquids, to the top of which is secured an annular threaded collar 6, a second annular threaded collar 7 is screwed into (5, and has depending therefrom a perforated metal tube 8, for preventing the access of flame to the contents of the container. This tube is suitably attached to the lower part of the collar 7, by rivets or other means. The cap 9 screws into the collar 7, and is provided at the outer or top end of bore with the pressure expansion safety venting disk 10, which is seated by pressure on the shoulder 11, and is held in position frictionally within the cap 9. i
12 is a perforated plate secured by spinning to the lower portion of the annular channel, for preventing back-fire of the flame. The arched or crown shape of the perforated metal plate provides a larger number of apertures to permit the gases to escape quickly from within the container and also strengthens the construction of this member.
13 is a ring, and 14: is a safety chain, both made of non-corrosive material and attached to both the cap 9 and the container 5, to prevent the loss of cap when removed for filling or emptying of container.v

15 is a circular gasket of leather or other suitable material recessed in the lower surface of the removable cap 9 insuring an airtight joint.
16 are holes for special wrench for removal or locking of cap.
8 is a perforated cylindrical filling tube provided at the bottom with a perforated plate with corresponding perforations to the tube. In case the cap 9 is removed and the gases become fired, the flame will in any case be prevented by the perforated tube 8 from passing to the body of the inflammable liquid insideof the container.
17 is an air-inlet passage of suitable diameter to allow air to enter the container when liquid is drawn from thebottom of same. i
The details of construction of my invention being subject to variations, I do not wish to confine myself to the precise construction shown herein, but rather to avail myself of any modification that may fall properly within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, the action of same is as follows: When the heat surrounding the container has generated sufficient pressure of the gases, the said pressure operating against the under face of the pressure expansion safety venting disk, will cause the same to bulge or expand 0ut- Wardly, thereby causing the flange of the disk to contract inwardly, and release the hold on the side -walls of the angular passage, thereby causing the disk to blow out and release the gases under pressure. The external diameter of the pressure expansion safety venting disk may be of such dimensions as to adapt it to be blown out at any desired pressure.
Having thus described my invention, and the action of same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is,-
