Be it known that I, PATRICK J. MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Test Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of lviassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descripltion of the invention, such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. l

This invention relates to ironing boards, and it more particularly relates to an improved clamping attachment for securing and stretching a cloth over the ironing board.

fin object of the invention is to provide an attachment of simple construction which may be quickly and easily attached to any ironing board or table, and which may be quickly and easily manipulated for securing cloth thereon and for releasing it therefrom.

Another object of the invention is to provide a clamping device of this character which is comparatively inexpensive and thoroughly eiiicient.

Other objects and advantages may be recited hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, which supplement this specification, Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of my improved ironing hoard attachment in operative position; Fig. 2 is au enlarged sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a similar view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and, Fig. 1- is a view similar to Fig. 3, ex cept that the clamp is shown in opened position.

In these drawings, which supplei'nent this spcciiication, an ordinary ironing boardv 5 is provided with the usual felt o-r fiber pad 6, and over this pad is spread the outer cover or cloth 7, which may be of any suitable material. This cover 7 is preferably pro` vided with hems 8 through which extend cords or wires 9, so as to form beads along the opposite longitudinal edges of the cover. Said cover' is also provided with suitable clasps 1() at its end portions, for holding the cover around the end of the board 5.

My clamping attachment essentially consists of a pair of clamping jaws 11, springs 12 and hinges 1S. The jaws 11 are prefer- Specication of Letters Patent.

ably elongated, so as to extend approximately the length of the ironing board and have their upper edges slightly curved inward, as shown at 14. The jaw members each carry hinge elements 15 which are pivotally connected to brackets 16, by means of screws or pivots 17. The brackets 1G are secured to the lower surface of the board 5 along its median line by means of screws 18. Brackets 19 are also secured to the board 5 by means of other screws 18, and carry pivots 2O around which are coiled the springs 12, the latter' having their respective ends loosely secured to lugs 21 on the respective aws 11. It is obvious that the jaws may be opened against the action of the springs 12, as shown in Fig. et and that they will be closed by the pressure of the springs when released. It will also be seen that the pressure o-f the jaws is in a direction substantially parallel with the lower surface of the cover 7, so that the beads on the adjacent edges of the cover continually tend to be drawn together, and the cover and pad remain smooth and even at all times.

It will be seen that I have provided a device of this character which is fully capable of attaining the forego-ing objects in a tho-roughly practical and etlicient manner.

I do not limit my invention to the exact details of construction, combination and ar- 1angement of parts, as herewith illustrated and described, but my invention may only be limited by a reasonable interpretation of the claim.

I claim:

In a device of the character described, a bracket having means associated therewith for securing it to a board, hinge elements pivotally connected to opposite sides of the bracket, and jaw members carried by the hinge elements and extending into proximity with the board and adapted to engage with a cloth on the board, and springs coact-ing with the jaw members for stretching said cloth tightly over the board.
