GEROME F. TADINI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SAFETY-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 24, 1913.
Application filed June 28,1912. Serial No. 706,335.
To all whom-2'15 may concern:
Be it known that I, GERoMn F. TADINI, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Bronx, city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Safety-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to safety locks adapted to be used for securing doors in position when slightly ajar. Heretofore for this purpose it has been customary to employ a chain lock, one end of which is secured to the door jamb, and the other end provided with a key adapted to fit a socket secured to the door.
My invention relates to adetachable device adapted to serve the same purpose. The same being detachable, it will be apparent that the lock made in accordance with my invention, may be used on any door, and furthermore may be carried as part of ones personal belongings.
The lock made in accordance with my invention preferably comprises a bar fitted with means adapted to engage the recess in which, when the door is ordinarily locked, the latch or lock passes, and a key adapted to so engage the said device as to secure a door in position when ajar, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
In the drawing I have illustrated by a perspective view, my improved safety lock as applied to a door.
Referring to the drawing, my safety lock preferably comprises a bar 10 of relatively thin metal or any other suit-able material, which adjacent to one end is provided with lugs 11. These lugs are preferably turned down from the sides of the bar. At the 0pposite end the bar may be provided with an eye 12, for the purpose hereinafter described. In the bar 10 I provide a slot 13, extending longitudinally of the bar, and the adjacent portions of the slot are preferably staggered, as is plainly indicated in the drawing. In connection with this bar, I also employ a. key member 14, one end of which is notched or provided with a series of teeth indicated at 15, and in the opposite end of the key member I employ a spring 16. One end of the spring is preferably fixed in the key by a rivet 17 or otherwise, and the opposite end of the spring is permitted to slide in a recess 18 provided therefor, so that the spring may be depressed and permitted to return to its normal position. At one end, the key member may also be provided with an eye 19, and the bar 10 and the key 14: connected by a chain 20, the respective ends of which are connected in the eye 19 in the key and the eye 12 in the bar.
In the use of the hereinbefore described look, as will be apparent from the drawing,t-he door to be latched having first been opened, the bar is placed in position against the door jamb with the lugs 11 inserted in the slot into which, when the door is closed and locked, either the lock or the latch passes. As will be understood, in this position, one face of the bar 10 lies flush against the door jamb. The door is now moved to a position in which it is slightly ajar and then the key member 14 is passed into one of the staggered portions of the slot 13, and as will be understood, is maintained in position therein by one of the teeth or notches 15 in one edge of the key engaging the shoulder in the end of the slotted portion in which the key is passed, and the spring 16 engaging the shoulder at the opposite end of this slotted portion, the edge of the key in which the spring is fitted bearing against the face of the door.
I claim as my invention:
A safety lock for doors comprising a bar, lugs attached to the bar at one end thereof and adapted to enter a slot in the door jainb, the said bar being provided with a recess running longitudinally thereof and portions of which are staggered in relationship to one another, and a key adapted to enter any one of the staggered portions of the said recess and provided with a series of teeth along one edge thereof, and with a longitudinal recess in the other edge thereof, a spring running longitudinally of the said bar in the said longitudinal recess, and means for securing the said spring in position to one end thereof, the opposite end of the spring being permitted to move in a recess in the key provided for this purpose.
Signed by me this 27th day of June, 1912.
GEROME F. TADINI.
