To all whom/15 may concern.'

Be it known that I, ALPHEUS KIMBALL, of Fitchburg, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Method of Conining the Sash and Bead Strips of Windows; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification.

In windows as at present constructed the sashes are held permaently in place by nails or screws, which it becomes necessary to draw before the sash can be removed from its frame.

My invention consists in securing the sash structed, to keep them tight and prevent the admission of wind and dust, while the same device answers to fasten the window when closed, and also to secure the sash in any position when open.

Figure 1 is an elevation of a window frame and sashes with my improvement attached. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section upon the line A A through the confining screw. Fig. 3 a transverse section upon the line B, B. Fig. 4 a transverse section Vupon the line C, C.

a is the sash strip which is confined in its place in the following manner: b is a mortise in the lintelof the frame of suflicient width and length t-o receive the sash strip, and of a depth suliicient to allow the strip to be passed up into it ;-the strip is then brought up into place and dropped into a corresponding mortise in the window sill, and is thus held secure as seen in Fig. 2, and is removed by first raising it into the mortise Z), suiiiciently high to enable the foot to be withdrawn.

c is a metallic ear or bracket, .one arm of which is secured to the jambs of the window frame, while the other or shorter arm lies immediately over the sash strip-d, is a thumb screw working in the ear c.

z' is a small metallic plate let into the surface of the strip a, immediately beneath the screw (Z. When the strip a, is in place afew turns more or less of the thumbfscrew cl, presses the strip against the sash, and if the latter be down, securely fastens it. When it is desired to raise the sash the screwV is first loosened, the Sash may then be raised, and by the tightening of the screw is held in position. It is furthermore contemplated to secure the bead strips g in a similar manner by means of the mortises above and below, and thus both the upper and lower sashes may be taken out when desired.

Where my improvement is to be applied to windows without weights and cords, springs may be applied to the sash, as seen at f, Fig. 4, which by pressure upon the window-frame prevent the sashes from falling when the confining screw is loosened.r It

may, however, with equal advantage be applied to sashes furnished with weights and cords, or to those held in place by spring and spring strips.

The advantages which my improvement possesses over all others with which I am acquainted aremany.

The sashes may at any time be removed from the window without the necessity of drawing nails or screws, or disfiguring the paint or woodwork.

The sash may be made to work so freely in its frame as never to bindJ while at the same time it may be instantaneously tightened to prevent noise and exclude wind and dust, the same device securing the sash when opened and fastening it when closed.-

I do not claim conning window strips or beads by letting them into mortises in the top and bottom of the frame, as this has been done before; buty n What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. Confiningy window sashes by means of strips which are raised into deep mortises in the top of the frame a suflicient distance to enable them to be dropped into shallow mortises at the bottom of the frame, the strips being held against the sashes by the pressure of a' screw or other` analogous de-V vice in the manner described.
