Description
N1 PETERS. PHOTO- LITMOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEETGE,
JOHN ROSENKRANZ, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN POUNClNG-MACHINES.`
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 106,409, dated August 1G, 1870.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JOHN RosENKRANZ, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pouncing-Machine; and.
I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to pouncing-m achines; and consists in certain improvements which will be rst described in connection with all that is necessary to a full understanding thereof, and then clearly speciied in summary or claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a vertical section of the machine on the line .fr m of Fig. 2, showing the apparatus for pounciug both the body and the brim of the hat. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the top of the bench or table, which is supported on the frame B. O is the hat-block upon the top end of the vertical shaft D. E is a pulley on this shaft beneath the hat-block, by means of which, with the band F, a rotating movement back and forth is imparted to the pouncing-roller G. The pouncing-roller G is attached to the lever.
Hl is a band-pulley on the upper end of the pin or bolt working on top'of the lever. This pouncing-roller is actuated by means of the band F from the pulley E, which band passes round the double pulley I. J is a stand which supports the pulley I, which stand is pivoted to the top of the table. K is a yoke, which is loosely attached to the projecting ends of the shaft-pulley I. This lever enters the bow of this yoke loosely, so that it readily revolves therein.
By this arrangement the lever H, with the pouncing-roller, is allowed a vertical, lateral, and revolving motion, so that the roller, which is at the same time ,given a revolving backandiforth motion, may be adjusted to any portion of the body of the hat.
It will be observed that the hat-block G is given the same back-andforth motion, but in an opposite direction from the roller, by means of a device now to be described.
L L are cranks on the shaft M, which shaft is supported on the lower timbers of the frame B.- N N are pitman-clamps on the wrists of the cranks L.
O O are belts, one end of which is clamped or fastened to the pitman. These belts pass upward and over the pulleys P P, and then extend in a horizontal direction to the hatblock shaft D, to the opposite sides of which shaft their ends are attached.
When the pitman-cranks L "L are rotated, or when they are given a vibratin g motionby means of the outside crank, L', they alternately pull, by means of the belts O O, upon the shaft D, and these belts, as before stated, being attached to opposite sides of the shaft, the effect is to vibrate or give shaft and hatblock a vibrating movement back and forth. This vibrating-or rotating motion is imparted to the pouncing-roller G by means of the band F,.as already described.
i R represents the brim-pouncer, which consists of two levers, S S, with the pouncingblocks T T upon their outer ends. U is the fulcrum-pin of these levers, supported by the table-top, with one of the levers above and one below the top, as seen in the drawing. The back ends of these levers are slotted, and in the slots boxes are made to slide, being confined by tongues and grooves, so that they are allowed a vmovement longitudinal with the levers. In the boxes eccentrics revolve on a vertical shaft, V, by means of the crank IV. X X represent the eccentrics.
Vhen the shaft V is revolved the effect is to give the ends of the levers and the pouncing-blocks T T a lateralvibratory or back-andorth motion, moving the blocks in opposite directions. By this arrangement both sides of the brim of the hat are pounced at the same time, and by this machine the labor and time usually employed in pouncing hats is greatly reduced.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a pouncing-machine, the arrangement of the roller G, having a vertical, horizontal,
and rotary motion, as and for the purpose speoied.
2. The pounoing-roll G, combined with a hatblook, C, the two Vibrating in opposite directions, as set forth. I
3. The combination, with brim-pounoing -rolls T T, of levers S S, arranged opposite to each other andvibratingin different directions, as described.
4. The combination of shaft V, having reverse cams X X thereon, and the hand-crank W, combined with two pivoted levers, S S, as and for the purpose specified.
lJOHN ROSENKRANZ.
