.hpggllieatton filed July Patented June 10, 1918.
12'?) all whom maycomwm:
I. l: lm'own that l, th amine W R. Smrrrt, tan oi the United Filtltl'es,'" resi.ding at lina, in the county of ll/liedinti and State oi Ohio, have invented. rtain new and nseilul Ltn'iprovements: in .iootingg fifihingles, oil which the :tollowine" is a sptmilioation.
Italy invention relates to improvements in rooting shingles, the. primar y object being to provide an improved t'orm olf shingle possensing many ad an ellniioalingr the use ,pt WhatlFflil'lOWtl as a storm nail new used in eonnection with ordinary asbestos shingles for securing the outer expoi-od eorners thereof.
The improved shingle is adapted to he *lornuid olany suilahle and etmvenient rooting: material, such as asbestos (-oinposilion, cement, eonereto. or the lilttin A. further ohjeel; is to tniorido a generally improved routine shingle or slah ol this ass, having its Parts and features of eon-- .--rt|'uelion so arranged relative to oaeh other, that uhrn laid. the parts and l'gealures of emislruetion will ooilpmale witln' the adjaeent ()Ytl'lflllllllti: shingles, and will interloelt with eat-h other and break joints in such a manner as to protlurc'a smooth and even outer surlluo ol' finished appearance. and at the escape of water From within the joints roonoirliiug' edgvs tliereo'l .i still further ohjewt is to provide an impi'ovril ('oun'msilion rooting shingle of such Form and dimensions that the same may he readily out for lilling in at the eaves and ig'ahle i-dp es ol the root.
Willthe above mentioned ends in view, the invention ronsists in the novel construelion. arrangement. and romhination of parts, hereinafter (inscribed, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accompanying draw Enos. and particularly pointed out in the appended elaims.
llel'erring to the drawings. forming a part ol' this spei-ilimition, ll'i zure it, a perspee live view oi a root section eonstruoted or made up of the in'iproved l'tlhllllfjj shingles, rerlain portions oi the latter lining lirolten auay tor the purpose of learer illustration of the parts. Flex 2. an enlarged perspeelive View of the improved rooting shingle, detached. l igzj. 3, a transverse rross seetional view of the same through the raised 5 panrl portion thereof. Fig. -11, a top plan view of the inunrtn'ed sliingle illustrating the same time prevent lraloigo and insole the manner in which the lower or exposed portion of the shingle may he out without waste for use along the nave portion of the root. Fig. 5, a similar view of the same, out use along; the gable edge of the roof.
Similar numerals of reference designate lilte parts throughout all the figures of the drawings The improved shingle 1, consists of a main body portion of suitable thiclmess and lateral dimensions, preferablyof rectangular term as shown, and is provided on its top or tare side with a similarly shaped panel portion 1, of like thickness extending from one side-or edge thereof and spaced from the remaining sides or edges as shown. The panel portion 1,'is preferably formed integral with the main body portion of the shingle and eorresptmds in width to 'the aggregate width of the lateral marginal or overlayming portions 1", of tho shingle, so that. when laid, this raised panel portion ('()]l0: })0il(lS in thickness to the thickness of the adjacent marginal or overlapping portions 1.", oi the adjacent shingles so that said overlapping" portions 1*, will abut against the sides of the raised panel portion and will extend flush therewith to form a smooth plane rooting sin-tare as indicated most t-learly in Fig. l, of the drawings. The panel portion l, is spared from the exposed or \vealluuedge of the shingle a distance to eorres|miul with the gage .desired, and the lateral overlapping portions 1 may be provided with suitably spaced nail receiving openings for nailingthe shingles in place, as shown.
In F'g. -'l, I have shown a manner in which the improved shingle may be out withoutivasto, and laid or tilled in along the eave portion of the root as shown in'l ig. 1. In l ig. 5, I have shown the improved shingle rut for use along the gable edge of the ir'nproved.rool", the harrow strip at the left being, in this instahriafwaste material.
From the foregoing description, taken in vonnetlion with the accompanying drawings, the construction and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
Having thus described one of the embodiments of my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is, V
'l. A rooting shingle having, a similarly shavml raised panel portion of like thickness spaced from three of its sides only.
2. A roofing; shingle having a raised face panel of the same thickness extending from v5. A roofing shingle, comprising a main section and a raised face section spaced from three of the sides of said main section and v extending flush with one of its sides, each of the lateral marginal portions ofsaid main 20 section corresponding in Width to half the Width. of said raised face section and being of the same thickness as the latter. In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
