IMPROVEMENT IN BOXES.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters. Patent and making part ci the same I, JOHN NELSON, ot' Rockford, in the count-y of Winnebago and State ot'` Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in the Construction of Boxes, of which the i'ollowing is a. description.

Boxes are constructed on this plan cheaply and very expeditiously, with what is known in nod-working machinery as atenoniiig-machine, and I shall therefore describe their construction wit-h reference to such machine, stating, however, that they are readily made with hand.l tools. t

The knives or cutters on one cutting head are of suoli shape as to cutthe upper side of' tongue b, leaving the elevation a and making the groove for tongue c. The other cutter finishes the other side of tongue b. Piece B ispassed once through these cutters, and the ends, being alike, are reversed, which finishes them. The pieces A A require but on one cutter-head, the knives eut-ting down the end and making the groove for b, and a coping cutter making the groove for a. For put-ting in the bottom and top pieces, D-E,

pieces A A may be rabbeted on their corresponding inner edges, and grooved on the others, as also pieces B B; but in all cases the grooves must be on opposite sides or edges ot' A and B, when put together, so that, when the piece D can be put-in the grooves ofA A on one side of the box, the piece E can be pnt in on thc other side, in tlie grooves of B B, the top and bot-tom pieces always moving at rightJ angles ,to each other.

The corners may beprevcnted from slipping by a screw, nail, or gluing.

It' desired to be taken apart and shipped empty, il screw should be used, which may be taken out and the boxes taken apart and packed closely, and'may be put together again very easily, thereby eifecting au importa-'nt saving in many cases. A single corner sealed wouid secure the box from being opened without detection.

That I claim as my invention, and desire to Secure by Letters Patent, is
