THOMAS MARSHALL, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 106,380, lated yiugust 16, 1870.
IMPROVED PORTABLE GAS-PIPE VI'SE.
The Schedulev referred to in these-Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom, t may concern Be it known that I,. THOMAs MARSHALL, of Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement'in" Portable Gas-pipe Vise; and I do hereby vdeclare that the followingr is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the-same, reference being had to accompanying drawing forming part oi this specitica` tion.
Figure l is a front View of my improvedwise.
Figure 2 is a detail'cross-section of the same, taken through the linex'x, lig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. p
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved portable vise Ifor holding gas pipes while-being cut oli, or having screw-threads cut upon their ends, and which shall be so constructed that the workman can conveniently carry it in vhis bag, and which may be readily attached to a bench, table, or other` support; and
It consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the vise, as hereinafter more fully described. I.
A represents the`base-plat'e of the vise, which is luade witha downwardly=projecting flange, a', upon its forward edge to overlap the f'ron't of the bench or other'support.
The 'rear part of the plate A and flange a' have' holes formed through them to receive the screws by which the vise is secured in place. A
'.B are bolts, which pass 'up through holes in the end parts of the base-plate A, and the heads of which are countersunk into the lower side of said plate A.
C is the top plate of the vise, which has holes formed through it near its ends for the passageof the bolts B.
' The plate C is forced Adown upon the plate A to clamp the pipe to be held by the nuts b', screwed upon the bolts B above the plate G.
When the nuts b are loosened to release the pipe, the plate G is raised and held up by the springs D, coiled around 'the bolts B, as shown in figs. l and 2.
` In the adjacent faces of the plates- A C, across their f middle parts, are formed dovetailed grooves, in which are placed the jaws E, the faces of which are made slightly concaved, and are toothedwas shown 1n the l drawing, to enable them to take a ii 'm hold upon the pi pe.
the lower plate A, near its front and rear edges, and one in the groove in the upper plate C, over thel space betweenthe two lower jaws,`as shown in fig. 2.- This `construction enables the pipeto be held securely and firmly, and at the same time produces a vise that the workman can convenient-ly carry with hun in hlsbag,
and readily attach to anypconvenient support.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters -Patent-- I prefer to use three 'jaws E, two in the groove in 'lhe above specification of my invention signed by
