'GOODWIN B. SMITH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED CORSET-COVER AND BUST-RUFFLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 27, 1913.
Application filed May 11, 1912. Serial No. 696,685.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GooDwIN B. SMITH, citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Corset-Covers and Bust-Ruffles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to under-waists, corset covers and the like and has for its object to provide a garment which will impart a bust-like form at the front of the dress or outer waist of the wearer.
A further object of the invention is to produce a bust form of a plurality of shirred or ruffled sections, the ruflles of which can be more easily and advantageously adjusted and more conveniently secured in adjusted position.
These and other objects will be apparent as the description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an inner face view of a garment with the bust form in place. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the garment partly broken away to show the bust form. Fig. 3 is a front view of one of the end sections and one of the center sections or ruffles, and Fig. at is a section on line 3-3 Fig. 3 the draw strings being omitted.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which like reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 5 is a corset cover having the usual arm-holes 6 and tie string or tape 7 and buttons 8. Preferably the front or central portion of the garment is provided with a plurality of tapering boX-plaits 9 extending in a diverging direction upwardly from the lower edge to the upper edge of the garment, but if desired, these plaits may be dispensed with. So far the garment described is or may be of any well known construction.
10 represents a bust form as a whole which in the preferred embodiment of the invention, comprises a plurality of shirred or ruffied sections 11, 12, 13, and 14:. These ruffies which are disposed vertically as best seen in Fig. 1 are attached to the upper portion of the inside of the waist. The outside sections or ruflles 11 and 14; have their outside edges stitched to the waist adjacent the armholes 6 as at 16, while the inner edges of these sections hang free. The two center sections are shirred or rufiled to the waist at their center as at 17. The center sections 12 and 13 are made of separate pieces of material and formed of a plurality of vertically extending shirrs as at 19, best illustrated in Fig. 3, while the end sections are tucked at their point of attachment to the waist as at 16. However, it is obvious that the number of tucks or shirrs maybe varied.
During the formation of the shirrs draw string openings 20 are provided extending throughout the length of the inner longitudinal edge thereof. Loosely running through these openings, are a plurality of draw strings 21 (one for each 0 ening) having one end connected to the ru e section at 22 and the other end to a tape 23 stitched on the inside and above the bottom of the waist 5.
By arranging the rufile sections vertically the ruffles can be shirred and the fullness adjusted exactly where desired. Moreover, it is only necessary to tie but one set of draw strings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is' 1. A ruffle waist comprising a garment of suitable material adapted to snugly fit the bust of a female figure, one or more ruflles secured adjacent the inside top edge of the garment, said ruflles having draw strings running vertically theret-hrough and means 1 for attaching said strings to the inside of the garment.
2. A rufile waist comprising a garment of comparatively light material, shaped to fit snugly the bust of the wearer, vertically disposed ruffies secured to the upper portion of the garment and spaced from each other, a length of tape secured to the garment below the ruffles, and draw strings passing loosely through the ruflles, and attached at their upper ends to the garment and at their lower ends to the tape.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
