To all. whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARY J. \VHITEHEAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Umbrellas and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in attachments for umbrellas and the like, an object of the invention being to provide a device which can readily be attached to an umbrella, whether old or new, so that the umbrella can be supported on the clothing of the person thereby doing away with any danger of loss.

A further object is to provide a device of this character which can easily be attached to an umbrella or the like, by any one of average intelligence and which when in position will. effectually perform the functions for which it is intended.

W ith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and an rangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my improvements attached to an umbrella. Fig. 2, is a broken plan view of the blank forming the band. Fig. 3, is a view partly in plan and partly in section. Fig. 4 is a view in elevation of the device at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 5, is a plan view and 6, is a perspective view of the hook carrying wedge plate.

1 represents an umbrella to the handle 2 of which my improved attachment is secured. This improved device comprises a band 3 cut from a single strip of metal as shown in Fig. The band has a centrally positioned tongue 4 at one end and tongues 5, 5, at the other end, spaced apart, the distance between the tongues 5 being equal to the width of the tongue 4, so that when the band is positioned around the handle of an umbrella, the tongue 4 will fit between the tongues 5 as shown in Fig. 4. The tongues stand 5 are bent at right angles on the lines 6, and then bent again at right angles on the lines 7 to form guides for a wedge plate 8. This wedge plate 8 has a hook 9 at its narrow edge, which, when the attachment is secured to a mans umbrella, is adapted to catch in his coat or vest pocket or on his belt, and when attached to a ladys umbrella is adapted to be secured to a cord around her neck. The plate 8 has an opening 10 to register with a slot 11 in tongue 4.

A screw 12 is projected through the openings 10 and slot 11 and is secured in the handle 2 of the umbrella and prevents any possibility of the wedge plate 8 dropping out of the guides. The screw is directly behind the hook 9, but as this hook is of spring metal, it can be readily moved aside to per mit the use of a screw driver.

In assembling the device the band 3 is positioned around the handle of an umbrella with the tongue 4 extending between the tongues 5. Wedge plate 8 is then positioned between the guides on the tongues and is pushed home until the opening 10 registers with the slot 11 at the same time tightly clamping the band 3 on the handle 2. The hook 9 is then held to one side while the screw 12 is secured in place when the device is ready for use.

While I have described my invention in connect-ion with an umbrella, I would have it understood that I do not limit myself in this respect, as the attachment can be used with equal efiiciency in connection with a cane, parasol, or the like.

Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my inven tion, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. An attachment of the character described, comprising a band, tongues on one end of the band, a tongue on the other end of the band and adapted to be positioned between the first mentioned tongues, guides on all of the tongues and a wedge plate adapted to be secured between the guides, substantially as described.

2. An attachment of the character de scribed, comprising aband, tongues on one end of the band, a tongue on the other end of the band and adapted to be positioned between the first mentioned tongues, guides on all of the tongues, a wedge plate adapted to be secured between the guides, and a hook on the Wedge plate, substantially as de scribed.

8. An attachment of the character de scribed, comprising a band, tongues on one end of the band spaced apart, a centrally positioned tongue on the other end of the band adapted to be positioned between the first mentioned tongues and having a slot therein, guides on all the tongues, a wedge plate adapted to be secured between the guides and having a screw receiving 0pening therein adapted to register with the slot, a screw positioned in the opening and projecting through the slot and a hook on the 15 wedge plate, substantially as described.
