EXTENSION SIDE-BOARD FOB VEHICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 29, 1913.
Application filed April 25, 1912. Serial No. 693,190.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN L. MOBELAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension Side-Boards for Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numbers of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to extension side boards sometimes called bumpers or throwing boards for vehicles and used during the gathering and hauling of husked corn and similar products which are thrown into the vehicle by a person standing near the same.
Heretofore extension side boards for Vehicles have usually been constructed of wood and in such a manner that it has been practically impossible to store the same when not in use without necessitating a great waste of space. Side boards such as have heretofore been constructed have proven unsatisfactory for the reason that they are usually so injured by the elements and otherwise between seasons as to render them useless for more than one season, consequently owing to the high cost of lumber the expense for repairs and renewals have practically rendered their use prohibitive.
It is an object of this invention to afford an extension side board for vehicles, which, when not in use, is capable of being knocked down and folded or rolled into an exceedingly small space to permit the same being conveniently stored between seasons.
It is finally an object of this invention to provide an exceedingly strong and durable extension side board, cheap to construct and maintain and which may be readily adjusted to fit any wagon box. I
The invention relates to the matters hereinafter described and more fully pointed out and defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device embodying my invention showing the same attached to a wagon box. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and showing one of the extension side boards removed. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan View of the device showing the same assembled and ready for installation. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary section taken on line 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view showing one of the adjustable hooks for engaging the extensions to the side boardsof the wagon box. Fig. 6 is an end view of the device, showing the same knocked down and rolled up for storage.
As shown in the drawings: A, indicates a wagon box supported upon a suitable running gear, and wheels 1, and comprising a floor 2, side walls 3, and end gates 4 A plurality of apertured bars 4, constructed of metal or other suitable material, and of a length sufficiently greater than the width of the side walls 3, of the wagon box to afford the desired height of the extension side board are each provided with a vertically adjustable hook or clamp 5, adapted to engage the top of the side walls 3, of the wagon box to secure the same in an upright position.
6 indicates a screen of woven wire or other suitable material, which is wound about the end bars 4, and secured to the same by means of clamping bars 7, which extend from the top of each bar 4, downwardly to a point slightly above the hooks 5, and are rigidly secured to said upright bars 4, by means of bolts 8. As shown, the bars 4, are spaced an equal distance apart by means of horizontal bars 9, which are connected therewith at the tops, centers and above the hooks 5, by means of the bolts 8, which connect the clamping bar and screen to the uprights 4.
The side boards are secured in position on the side walls 3, of the wagon box, by means of the vertically adjustable hooks 5, which are adjustably secured in vertical slots 10, provided in each of'the lower ends of the vertical bars 4, by means of bolts ll.
The operation is as follows: It is obvious from the construction described that hooks 5, may be adjusted in the slots 9 to permit the attachment of the device to practically any wagon box. When it is desired to remove the device from the wagon box to store the same the entire structure is detached from the side board 3, and lifted from the wagon box. The nutson the bolts 8, are then removed to permit the detachment of the bars 9. After the horizontal spacing bars 9, have been detached the nuts are tightened against the clamping bars 7, to securely bind the same against the screen and bars 5, and permit the device to be rolled up for storage as shown in Fig. 6.
It is obvious that many details in the construction of this device may be varied Without departing from the spirit of my invention. I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent to be issued on this application otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim my inv ntion:
1. An extension side board for vehicles embracing a plurality of bars each provided with a slot near one end thereof, an adjustable hook engaged in each of said slots and adapted to engage the side Walls of a Wagon box, a clamping bar rigidly secured to each of said upright bars and extending from the top thereof to a point slightly above the top of said hooks and a screen secured intermediate said upright bars and said clamping bars.
2. An extension sideboard for vehicles embracing a plurality of upright vertical bars each provided With a slot in the lower end thereof, a vertically adjustable hook engaged in said slot and adapted to engage the side Walls of a Wagon box, a clamping bar rigidly secured to each of said upright bars and extending from the top thereof to a pointslightly above the top of said hooks, a Woven Wire screen secured intermediate said upright bars and said clamping bars, and horizontal spacing bars removably secured to said upright bars to afford a rigid frame.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses. I
MARTIN L. MORELAND. Witnesses:
