INDEX-TAB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 1913.
Application filed December 9, 1909. Serial No. 532,212.
To all whom z't'mag concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. Brssnx, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Index-Tabs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an index tab comprising a flexible body portion having an interior reinforcing member of tough and resilient material, in combination with means for fastening the body securely and symmetrically.
Its leading objects are to provide a tab which will not break down or tear at the line of juncture with the indexed sheet, will prevent the indexing character from being destroyed or obliterated by the crumpling of the material upon which it is imprinted, will maintain the tab in its original and desired projecting position, will provide an extended and reliable engagement having the minimum tendency to tear the indexed sheet, and which can be quickly, securely and symmetrically fixed to such sheet by a single simple operation.
In its preferred form my invention comprises a body consisting of a strip of resilient metal having folded over an end thereof and glued thereon a leather strip,
and a flexible stay through which the body extends and to which the leather strip is secured the stay having members which register wlth the indexed sheet so as to properly position the tab and engage the sheet so as to secure the tab.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of my improved tab applied to a sheet to be indexed; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a detached tab; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
As shown in the drawings, a leather strip 1 is folded lengthwise over one end of and gummed to a resilient metal strip 2 so that the ends or lips 1' of the cover extend approximately to or beyond the other end of the metal strip, to which one of the extensions 1 is gummed and secured by a sheet or fabric 3, the other extension being free.
A gummed stay or grip 4, having the aperture 5 therein, is passed over the body and secured to the lips 1 in position to provide an extension of the body for holding it and to give the desired exposure to the indexing character 6 stamped upon the outer portion of the body. The stap provides means for correctly positioning the tab with reference to the indexed sheet 7 and fastening it thereto securely, by broad engaging surfaces, reducing the tendency to disengagement and tearing to a minimum.
Upon moistening the gummed inner surfaces of the stay and the parts secured thereto, the tab may by a single .operation be accurately placed and secured upon the sheet to be indexed, where the broad bearing surfaces of the stay insures a firm grip; the metal strip holds the material of the body smooth and taut, prevents softening or breaking down of the tab and the flaking ofi of the gold leaf usually placed thereon, and its resiliency brings the tab back to its correct projecting position when it has been bent therefrom by any cause, as the force of a blow.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. An index tab comprising a resilient re inforcing member and a covering therefor, said covering having a section secured to said reinforcing member and a free end for engaging a member to be indexed, and positioning and fastening means connected with said covering.
2. An index tab having a body comprising a resilient reinforcing member adapted to extend over the edge of a member to be indexed and a flexible member in which said reinforcing member is incased, in combination with a stay through which said body is passed and to which said flexible member is secured, said stay having members adapted for engaging and positioning a sheet between them.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my name this 6th day of December, 1909, in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE E. BISSEX.
