To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS L. FAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ketchikan, in the District of Alaska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Board Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to wood cutters appliances, and more particularly to spring board holders, and has for its object to provide a holder of this kind which may be quickly and easily attached to a tree to be chopped, and which will be so arranged that a spring board may be quickly placed therein or removed therefrom.

Another object is to provide a holder of this kind which will be simple in arrangement and structure, and which may be produced with little labor and consequently at a low figure.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is an elevational view of a tree to which the present invention is attached, Fig. 2 is a topv plan of the holder itself, Fig. 3 is a side view of the holder, Fig. 1 is a bottom view of the holder, Fig. 5 is a blank from which the plate member is formed, Fig. 6 is a transverse section on line 66 of Fig; 2, taken in the plane of the rod attaching eyes.

Referring now to the drawings, the present board holder comprises a member 7 formed from a flat blank of sheet metal of rectangular form. At one end, this blank is split longitudinally in two parallel lines as shown at A and B, to produce side portions C and an intervening portion D. In forming the device, the intervening portion D is bent upwardly to produce a vertical portion 8 and is then bent forwardly at its extremity as shown at 9. A curved metal strap 10 is provided, its curve extending throughout approximately one hundred and eighty degrees of a circle, and this strap is disposed with the central portion of its curve upon the portion 9 of the plate 7. The strap thus includes two legs 11 and 12 respectively which extend forwardly, and which, at a point approximately opposite to the forward end of the plate 7 are bent downwardly as shown at 13, these downwardly bent portions being given a one-half turn, and the extremities of the strap being then bent inwardly as shown at 15, to rest against the under surface of the plate 7 at the forward end thereof. The extreme ends of the extremities 15 of the strap are disposed in meeting relation, and a tie plate 16 is disposed upon the meeting portions, extending oppositely beyond the union a considerable distance, for the passage of rivets 17 through the ends of the strap, the plate 7 and the tie plate 16. A central barb member 19 is also engaged through these portions, and extends upwardly above the upper face of the plate 7 Two longitudinally extending bars 20 are disposed on the under surface of the plate 7, one adjacent to each side thereof, and extending beyond the rearward ends of the side portions 0 of the plate 7. As shown 1n the drawings, and as will be understood from the description, these side portions extend rearwardly beyond the rearmost point of the strap 10, and as also illustrated in the drawings, the side portions are curled around the rearward extremities of the bars 20 and are welded thereto, the rearward ends of the bars being sharpened. The side port1on s O and the bars thus form rearwardly pro ect1ng spikes 21 to be driven into a tree as will be later brought out.

At their forward ends, the bars 20 are disposed upon the inwardly turned portions 15 of the strap 10, and engaged through these forward ends of the bars, and through the strap and the plate 7 are the shanks 22 0f downwardly extending eyes 23. These eyes 23 have engaged therein the upper ends of supporting rods 24, having their lower ends bent at right angles as shown at 25, to be driven into the trunk of a tree in which the spikes 21 are driven, tosupport the forward end of the holder. After the holder has thus been attached, a spring board 26 1s engaged in the holder in the manner disclosed in the drawings.

What is claimed is:

A device of the class described comprising a metallic plate having its rearward end cut to form a central portion and two side portions, the central portion being bent upwardly and then inwardly, an arcuate strap secured at the center of its arc to the inwardly bent portion, and in a plane above and parallel with the plate, said strap including portions extended downwardly from the forward ends of the curved portions and then turned inwardly and extended beneath the forward portion of the plate, bars secured to the under surface of the plate and extending beneath the inwardly turned portions of the strap, said bars extending beneath the rearwardly projecting side portions of the plate, said side portions of the rear of the plate being curled around the bars to form spikes for engagement in a tree, and an upwardly extending barb carried by the forward end of the plate.
