To all whom it may concern:

Be 1t known that I, FREDERICK BENNETT,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Ravenswood, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sofa- Beds, of which the following is a specification.

' This invention relates to improvements in sofa-beds.

The primary object of'my invention is to: improve upon the sofa-beds shown and cleto expose the upholstering in both adjust-' ments.

There is some objection to the use of the upholstery in the bed adjustment and consequently, I have devised and will hereinafter describe an arrangement whereby, when the sofa-bed is in bed adjustment, ticking surfaces, instead of upholstery will be presented upon both members of the sofa-bed and the invention contemplates a mechanism whereby a flap or independent member is automatically, in the adjustments of the sofabed, brought to a position wherein it forms the seat of the sofa, when in sofa ad j ustment and a part of the bed section, when in bed adjustment.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical partial sectional view, with one of the end members of the frame removed, and the parts in sofa adjustment; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the sofa-bed in bed adjustment; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the. hinge employed for con necting the two sections.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates one of the end members of the frame, which are rigidly connected at their lower ends by a box 2, the end sections being so shaped as to form sofa arms when the sofa-bed is in sofa adjustment, and head and end pieces when the sofa-bed is in bed adjustment. The top edge of the box 2 forms a rail 3, upon which the bed members are supported, and upon which they are capable of a sliding movement, for purposes that will become apparent.

The numeral 4 designates one of the bed members and the numeral 5 designates the other. These members are hinged together by a spring-hinge 6, the leaf 7 of one hinge section being rigidly secured to the member 4 and the other leaf 8 of the hinge being similarly secured to the other member 5. The leaf 7 has integral therewith an upwardly extending arm 9 provided with a pintle 10, to which is pivotally secured what I will hereinafter term as a flap member 11, which is of a length about equal to the length of the bed members. As indicated at 12, the surface of the flap section is upholstered and as indicated at 13, it is provided with ticking. The upper surface of the bed section 4 is provided with ticking, as indicated at 14. One surface of section 5 is upholstered, as indicated at 14. Secured to the member 5 is a bracket 15, to the upper end of which, as indicated at 16, a link 17 is pivoted. The opposite end of this link is pivoted at 18, to a bracket 19, rigidly secured to the sofa-bed frame. To the lower end of the bracket 15, as shown at 20, a link 21 is pivoted, whose other end is pivoted at 22 to the flap section 11.

Extending across the bed-section 5 is a cross-piece 23 which carries a roller 24 adapted to engage the upper surface of the rail 3, when the sofa-bed is in bed adjustment. The member 4 carries a roller 25 which rests upon the rail 3 and the rail 3 at its forward end is provided with a roller 26, which supports the forward end of the member 4, both during its shifting movement on the box, and while the member 4 is at rest.

The spring hinge is of substantially the same construction as shown and described in my patent hereinbefore referred to, that is to say, the part 7 of the spring carries a pin 27 surrounded by a torsional spring 28, one end of the spring being'connected to the pin and the other end of the spring connected to the part 8 of the hinge, so that when the bed sections are moved to bed position, the spring will be put under considerable ten sion, exerting a tendency to resist somewhat the force necessary to force the parts to bed position, which will obviously assist in reestablishing the parts when manipulated to bring about sofa adjustments.

The front surface of member 5 is upholstered so that when the parts are in the adjustment shown in Fig. l, or sofa-adjustment, upholstery will be presented on the back, and seat of the sofa-bed.

In operation, taking the position shown in Fig. 1, assuming it to be desired to convert the contrivance into a sofa-bed, the back is pulled backward and downward, which in the initial movement will cause the link 21 to lift the flap section, and during the movement of the parts bring the same ultimately against the section 5, where it finally rests. During this movement of the flap section, obviously, the ticking surface 14 of the member 4 will be'exposed and likewise the ticking surface 13 of the flap section will be exposed, for the reception of a mattress, mat or other sleeping contrivance. During the movement of the parts from the position shown in Fig. 1, to that in Fig. 2, the spring will be placed under tension, as before suggested, which tension is not sufiicient, of course, to lift the section 5 when in bed position, but will assist materially in restoring the parts to sofa adjustment.

It will be noted that the flap section 11 when the contrivance is in sofa adjustment, serves as a lock for the back and it will be further noted that the movement of the flap will move the back, or the movement of the flap and member 4 will operate the back and that a movement of the back will operate the fiap, etc., all of the manual movements of the various parts, bringing about an automatic movement of the remaining parts, due to the peculiar way of connecting up the various parts.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A sofa-bed, comprising a suitable base, two bed members supported on said base, and hinged together, a link connecting the frame and one of the bed sections, an independent flap section between the two bed members, and a link connection between the flap section and one of the bed sections, whereby when the sofa-bed is in bed adjustment, the flap section will be adjacent to the bed member, which forms the sofaback when the parts are in sofa adjustment.

2. A sofa-bed, comprising a suitable base, two hinged bed sections, a link connection between one of the bed sections and the frame, an independent pivoted flap section between the two bed sections, a link connection between the flap section, and one of the bed sections, whereby said flap section is folded against one of the bed sections in the movement required for bed adjustment,

said flap section being provided upon its top with upholstery and upon its underneath surface with ticking, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. A sofa-bed comprising a suitable base and frame, two bed sections supported upon said base, a hinge connecting the two bed sections, one of the parts of said hinge being extended and carrying a pintle, an independent fiap section pivotally mounted upon said pintle, a link connection between the frame and one of the bed sections, and a link connection between the flap section and one of the bed sections, whereby the flap is folded against one of the bed sections in the movement necessary to convert the sofa-bed into bed ad ustment.

i. A sofa-bed, comprising a suitable base,

two bed members hinged together and movably-supported upon said base, one of said members being adapted to serve as a back in sofa position and the other as a bed memberin bed position and an auxiliary member pivoted between the two members, said auxiliary being arranged to serve as a seat in sofa position, and as a bed member in bed position.

5. A sofa-bed, comprising a suitable base, two bed members hinged together and movably-supported upon said base, one of said members being adapted to serve as a back in sofa position, an auxiliary member p1voted between the two members, and connections between the auxiliary member and one of the bed members, whereby said auxiliary member is adapted to serve as a seat in sofa position, and as a bed member in bed po- 3 sition.

6. A sofa-bed, comprising a suitable base, t wo bed sections hinged together and movably-supported upon said. base, one of said members being provided with upholstery to V serve as a back and the other member with a mattress to serve as a bed section, and an auxiliary member pivoted between the two bed members, said auxiliary member having an upholstered side to serve as a seat when in sofa position and a mattress side to serve as a bed member when in bed position.
