WILLIAM S. CURTIS AND ED'WARLD IF. CURTIS, OF PORTLAND, OREON.
cannon.
'pecification of Letters l atcnt.
ljatcnted Mar. 1%., it EH3.
provision of certain improvements in pipe. dredges of a simple but highly efiicient charactor for gathering the earth, mud,--gravel or sand, etc... mingled with water, at the bottom of a river or harbor, and forcing the same, under a hydraulic pressure through a giant nozzle and discharging the gathered material at a desired distancefrom the orig-- inal excavattfn without the use of pipe lines,
barges, troughs, etc, such as are commonly used for conveying the discharged c llections from the gathering point.
Another object of our invention is the pro vision of certain improvements in dredges, whereby to produce the hydraulic giant. effect of discharging the material collected by. thedredging apparatus per so, in such a manner as to effect a, great saving in time and labor, by eliminating the handling and anchoring of pontoons, such as are commonly used for supporting a pipe line discharge as well as the refitting of pipe joints in the said line;
.A further object or our invention is the provision of an improved construction of dredging ap aratus having a special design,
and cotipera tire arrangement ofparts whereby the same is capable of Working advantageously in rough water as well as in smooth water.
Referring now to the drawings,-h lgure 1, is a-plan view that shows the general construction andarrangement of the parts that constitute our improved dredge. Fig. 2, is a diagrammatic side elevation thereof. Fig. 3, is a detail top plan view '(parts being broken away) of the means for supporting.
and raising and lowering the suction pipe "and cutter devices. Fig. 4, is a detail cross section on the nne 4t-4 on Fig. 8.
Fig. 5,
is a detail view of the ejecting nozzle coupling. Fig. 6, is a detail. perspective view of the cutter.
In-the practical appucatlon or our invention, the same, in its complete make-up, in-
cludes a suitable vessel in the nature of. a
hull with a divided stern. V
'l designates a rotary cutter for cotiperah ing with the suction pipe 5 that leads to a single centrifugal pump 6, suitably mounted upon the hull deck and coupled with and driven by the engine or motor 15 which is indirect connection with the said pump 5. the latter furnishing the suction power for gathering the dredged material loosened b t the rotary cutter carrying shaft 2'? to whic power istransmitted, through the gear 30 on a shaft 3 mounted on the dredging end of the. hull, see Figs. 1 and 2, and which meshes with the gear 538 on the shaft 2?. Suction pipe 5 includes a. main. or'suction portion that terminates in a yoke 50 includ ing laterals 51. 51 rockably mounted in the adjacent.- sides of the divided end of the huli and a main or otltahe portion 52 that joins with a fiuid tightcoupling or union 53 mounted on. one of the pipe laterals 51, as is clearly shown in Fig. 4, by reference to which it will be also noticed that the othe. lateral 51., which forms one of the journals for the frame, is closed a cap 54. The offtake portion 51 of the pipe 5 conveys the dredgings to the pump 6 and from the said pump, they are drawn cit into a pipe line 7 that connects with the four-way coupling 70, the, laterals '71 of which are normally closed by cap plates 72.
One of the outlets 72 of the coupling 70. detachahlyjoins with a short pipe line 73 that delivers the dredging from the single stage ccntrijfugal pump 6 to a. multistage centrifugal turbine or turbo-centrifugal pump 8 of the commercially known t'y e, which creates a high hydraulic pressure or discharging the collected mud, earth, sand,
gravel, or other solidsyiningled with water through the discharge pipe. 9 that. extends forwardly and upwardly and connects with 10 designates a giant nozzle and tlie same has an adjustable ball and'soc'ket connection -facilitate adjusting the said 12 with the pipe section 90, see Fig. '5, to giant nozzle in the directions desired.
a 13 and 14 designate boilers for operating .the engines for the single and the multistage pumps 6 and 8 respectively and 16 desigua'tes an engine for operating the cutter shaft, the transmission gearing and the gearing for actuating the devices tor raising and lowering the cutter and suction pipe i'ntake portion frame 2, the bottom of which carries collar mountings 20 fixedly conhull for anchoring and changing the position of the hull, it being understood the said cables engage and wind on the winches 17.
I ?.designates a winch that takes up a hoisting cable 21 that passes up over a pulley block 22 pendent from the upper end of a supportor crane 24 fixedly mounted on and projected over the divided end of the hull. Cable 21. passes down over a pulley block 25 ona hanger 26 that includes a chain sling 29 for passing around the front end of the suction pipe From block 25, the cable 21 passes backover the pulley 22 and connects with the hanger 26, as shown.
.1 While"'w'e have not illustrated it, in prac tice countershaft 18.is equipped with friction and clutch devices of any wellknown type for selecting and throwinginto and out.
of action the'desired ones winches o-r drums.
of the winding From the foregoing taken in connection with the drawings the construction, the mannerrof operation and the advantages of our invention will be readily apparent.
By reason of arranging the dred ing and dlscharging means as shown andescribed, the said means can be readily installed on a' self-propelled sea'going hull, and on able 'of working continuously While the sai seagoing hull is in motion and since the'use of pontoons and pipe lines thereto are eliminated our improved dredging means is practicable in water rougher'.than that in which 'pipe lines supported by pontoons could work. p
".What we claim is:
,1 In a dredge,'a hull, a frame thereon pro ected over one end thereof, a digger and a suction pipe section mounted thereon, a discharging nozzle mounted on the other end ot the hull, a primary pumping means conn cted with the suction pipe, and a second-' ary pumping means in communication with the first pumping means and the nozzle.
2. Ina dredge, a hull, a frame thereon projected over one end thereof, a digger and a suction pipe section mounted thereon, a discharging nozzle mounted on the other end of the hull, a rimary pumping means connected with t e suction pipe, a secondary pumping means in communication with the first pumping means and the nozzle, the said primary pumping means comprising a single stage centrifugal pump and the secondary pumping means consisting of a multistage centrifugal pump.
