'specification vof Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 18,1913.
Application led June 22, 1912. Serial No. 705,269.
' Tmanufactured out `of sheetmetal and the parts easily and quickly assembled and disconnected Jfrom each other. And the inven tion also'aims to generally improve devices oitthis class so as torendei them more useul and commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear yas Ithe description proceeds, the invention consistslin certain constructions, arrangements and combinations ot the parts )that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a tulll understanding of thelinvenf.
I tion, Vreference is to be had to the following description and accompanying draw1ng,'1n
` which,
the device. Fig. 4 is a improved fastening device consists 'y `50 Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of one form or embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectionalview, thereof` on the line 2-2 of'Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinalv section of another embodiment of transverse sectional view"thereo;tl on the v line 4-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 illustrates another` .embodiment here-I inafter specifically described, and, Figs. 6 and 7 illustrate the two'complemental part of still another modification.
,Corresponding and like dBSlg'. drawing by like reference characters. g f
In that embodimentof my invention illustr`ated-in Fig.` 1,* the female member of my glefstripof sheet metaldoubled u on itsel and shaped tion g1 and a slightly `.lar r` preferably rounded head 2 at one endo the body porftion,` the body portionl bein tubular and composed o-two semi-cylindrical parts that `punched *through the leaves parts arereferred -to in the following description, and .nated in the accompanying of a sinto form a cylindrical ody por are separated from leach' other throughout their length by diametrically disposed 1ongitudin'al slots 3, said parts being integrally joined together at one end by the head 2, as clearly illustrated in the drawing. Y The complemental member also consists preferably of a single` or inte al metallic strip doubled'upon itself' to rm the disk-like head 4' and the locking members or arms 5 which possessresilient characteristics and ,tend to spread apart, being formed at their relatively free extremities with outstanding and laterally projecting latch teeth 6 which are preferably of less width than the locking arms 5 and of a width substantially equal to the longitudinal slots 3, although it is to 'be understood that the invention is not limited in this regard. These teeth are designed or lockingv engagement with keepers 7 which, in that embodiment ofy the invention now being described, are in the form of transversely elongated slots which are arranged in two longitudinally extending series on the two -part-s ot the body portion 1;,
,sa-id slotsterminating short of the side edges of these two- .parts so as to leave smooth portions Frorm'as much ofthe description as has preceded in connection with the correlated `views-oit1 theaccompanying drawing, it will be understood that in the practical applicationl of the device, ater openings have been or sheets to be temporarily or permanentl bound together, the female member of the fastener is preferably irst inserted through the-sheets, and
the complemental member is then inserted into the first .named member with the latch teeth 6 sliding alon the smooth portions 8, or, if desired, in telslots 3, whereby the p 8 which4 deine or border i upon the longitudinal slots 3.
male member will be properly guided until j the required point has been reached,'where upon it may be turned axially so that the latch teeth 6 will snap out into-the keeper slots 7. 'In disengaging the'device,
necessary to-.turn the male member 'of the 'fastener aXia-llyso 'as 'to disengage vthe teeth 6 from the slots 7, whereupon one part may be detachedfrom the other. .By 'making the c latch teeth 6 'of a size to it in they slots "3, it is evident that" when the male member is turned axially to disengage the teeth from the keeper slots 7, said teeth will snap into the lslots 3 and not only indicate that the deit is only proper separation of the vicehas been unfastened, but will. insure the parts as the teeth will move along the slots.
It is to be understood that my invention is not` limited to the exact construction, arrangement and proportions lof the parts herenbefore described, but that. various changes may be made from the scope of the invention, as defined in thesappendedclaim. For example, reference is to be had to the Fig. 3 lwherein the female member designated la ythe corresponding part illustrated in Fig. l, in that the member I has its keepers in the form of teeth 7a punchedf through `from t-he outside and the male member has its locking arms 5 formed withlongitudinal slots 6 designed for engagement with the keeper teeth 7a in an evident manner. If desired,
the male member of the device may be c0111-,
osed of tw'o semi-cylindrical members 5b formedy with teeth 6b punched through from the inside and designed for interlocking engagement with the teeth 7a just described.
Where it isjdesired to`fasten together only a few sheets, I may use complemental membersl like those illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 wherein the male member designated` 5 is formed'with teethlilevthe teeth 6 before described andthe lfemale member. 1c formed with kee odiment of -the `invention first lherein described, `only in bei ing made smaller, for a manifest reason, and
Without departing differs from.
r slots 7*, .the two parts of the fasv tener di ering from that em in that the female member has its relatively free ends ypointed as indicated'at`9, whereby' it may be passed through sheets that have not-been previously punched. ,y
It will thus be seen that I have provided a very simple, durable and efficient construction of fastener of the character described,
' and one that may be cheaply manufactured and readily assembled and disassembled and not liable to get out of order.
What l claim is A fastener of the character described, consisting of telescoping members, one of which is formed of a single strip of metal doubled 'upon itself intermediate of its ends to form a head and the ends extended parallel to eachother and of semi-cylindrical sha e, said ends being separated one from t e other throughout their extent, and the other member bein also formed of a single strip of metal dou led u on itself to form a head, and inwardly yiel ing latch arms 'designed for insertion in between the two separated ends of the first named member which are formed with keepers, saidarms bein engageable with said keepers, substantia y as shown and described. y
ln testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in thepresenoe of two witnesses.
