ELASTIC SUPPORTER.
APPLIUATION FILED saw. so, 1910.

UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANNA V. ZIEGLER, OF L OS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.-
' ELASTIC SUPPORTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 30, 1910. Serial No. 584,749;
Patented Mar. 4, 1913.
To alZIwk om it may concern Be it known that- I', ANNA V. ZIEGLER, a citizen of the United States,- residing at Los Angel'es, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elastic Supporters,- of which the following. is a specification.
Ill-is customary. in making pantaloons,
bloomers or similar garments for children, to" provide adJacentto the knee portion of the garment an elastic ribbon or supporter to embrace the leg and by which the knee portion of the pantaloons, or bloomers are heldup in proper place when worn. he elastic supporter ordinarily used is perhanently appliedto the garment and becomes rotten when-the latter is washed or when the garment is worn .111 places ad acent to salt; water, necessitating frequent renewal of the supporter.
The present invention is designed to provide" a detachable supporter of the kind above described and having'advantages over i the ordinary one used from the stand-point of readiness with which the invention may be applied or renewed.
For a full understanding of the present invention reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the leg portion of a garment, the lower portion in the-illustration bein broken away to show the invention app died thereto; Fig.
2' is an enlarged view 'bringing out more clearly the construction of the end members of the supporter, the body of the latter beingbroken away; Fig. 3 is a modification of the invention; and F ig.4 is a detail perspective view of the loop and pivoted stop shown in Fig. 3.
Throughout the followingdetail description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
In the drawings, the garment is denoted 1 and as customary is formed at the lower end of the: leg portion withv an annular pocket 2split at any suitable point to form an opening 3 at which point the elastic or- Y flexible. supporter 4 is insertible into the free extremity of which is formed to provide a catch or loop 5'. the supporter 4 has secured thereto acatch member 6 provided with a head or button 6 over which the loop or catch 5 engages when the ends of the supporter are connected together. the catch member 6 may be secured to an end of the supporter 4 in any suitable man ner, but the preferred means em loyed' comprises'a clamp member 7 made rom a piece of metal bent upon itself to' provide a loop 8 receiving an end of the catch member 6, the side portions of the clamp member 7 being pressed together to clamp one end and used as an ordinary bodkinfor the purpose of facilitating the passage of the supporter through the pocket, or almost entirely through because itis necessary that the end carrying the catch 6 be exposed sufficiently to permit the catch 5' of the member 5 to be engaged therewith. In
The other end of It is contemplated that introducing the supporter 4 into the pocket 2 of the garment, as soon as the bodkin member 5 has passed through the pocket, it will be pulled upon to properly position the supporter, and the stop 9' is advantageously used because it engages with the end of the pocket into which the bodkin member is first introduced, preventing the supporter from being drawn all the way through the pocket, necessitating that the operation of applying the same be started over again.
A modification of the invention is illustratcd in Fig. 3, wherein a different form of clamp member 9' is employed, said member consisting of a loop receiving the end portion of the member 4 and having asmall stop 10 pivoted toits outer side, said stop being movable to engage and clamp the material from which the supporter is made, and when so engaged the outer extremity of the stop projects to prevent the member 9 from being drawn into the pocket 2 of the garment in the operation of applying the supporter thereto.
The invention is very simple and affords a very desirable article from the standpoint of one who has to keep'childrens garments in good order or make the same.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is:
In combination, a garment portion provided at its extremity with an annular pocket having a lateral opening, a section of elastic webbing inserted in the pocket and-having its free ends extending through the lateral opening, a loop member normally permanently connected with one free end of the elastic Webbing, a co-acting element normally detachably connected with 'the other free end of the elastic webbing and having an opening through which such free end is passed and subsequently bent back upon the body portion of the elastic Webbing, a sleeve surrounding this free end portion of the webbing, and a pivoted ele ment carried by the sleeve, having its inner end engaging the overlapped free end of ping, and its outer end extending laterally outwardly to engage the wall of the lateral opening of the pocket, to prevent this end engagement with the wall to'increase the clamping action of its lnner end on the webbing, substantially as described.
