WINDMILL ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY P. KAY, a citizen of the United States, residingat Proctor, in the county of Comanche and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windmill Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had thereinto the accompanying drawing. 1 s
This invention relates topumps and has special reference to a pump adapted for operation either by wind mill or hand power.
The principal object of the invention is to improve and simplify the general construction of devices of this character.
A second object of the invention is to provide a lost motion device of novel character whereby the pump may be operated manu ally while the wind millis at rest without disconnecting the sucker rod from the wind mill.
A third object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby the well tube may be extended to a distance above the top of the well and yet operated from the ground. With the above and other objects in View,
the invention consists in general of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wind mill tower equipped with the improved ump device. Fig. 2 1s an enlarged side e evation, partly broken away and partly in section, of such adevice. Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal section on the line 3-3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section of the upper end of the pump rod and the connecting swivel showing the movement of the device under the influence of the wind mill. Fig. 5 is a similar view to Fig. 4t showing the movement during manual operation. Fig. 6 is a view of a clamp used to connect a certain lever to the sucker rod.
In carrying out this invention there has been shown 1n the present embodiment a skeleton wind mill tower 10 and extending upward from the center of the base of this tower is vertically disposed well tubing 11 provided adjacent the ground with a lower Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed June 17, 1912. SerialNo. 704,192.
T-fitting 12 from which extends a lower delivery pipe 13. Near the top of the tubing there is provided an upper T-fitting 14 from which extends an upper delivery pipe 15. Extending downward into the tubing 11 is a sucker rod 16, upon the upper end whereof is provided an enlarged head 17 which is held within a tube 18 provided witha closed lower end having a suitable centrally disposed opening 19 wherethrough the sucker rod passes. Into the upper end of this tube 18 extends a cylindrical bar 20 which is se:
cured in the tube by means of suitable bolts.

the upper end of these links is secured a swiveled sleeve 24 wherein is held the head 25 of a swivel 26 suitably carried at the lower end of the wind mill pump rod 27 By means of this arrangement the pump rod may be rotated without rotating the sucker rod.
Secured to one of the .members of the frame 10 is a lever 28 provided with a series of openings 29 spaced therealong and in one" of these openings is secured a reach 30 the upper end whereof is attached to the outer end of a lever 31 of L-shape in plan as can be seen by reference to Fig. 3. This lever 31 has the arm whereto the reach 3O is attached pivoted intermediate its length to the same frame member as the lever 28 as can be seen at 32. Upon the inner end of the remaining arm of the lever is provided a relatively broad U-shaped head 83 having alined outwardly extendingflanges 34. This head 33 bears against one side of the sucker rod 16 and is clamped thereto by means of a clamp 35 shaped exactly like the lead 33 and similarly provided with flanges, the flanges of the clamp and head being held together by means of bolts 36.
In the operation of the device whenitis desired to move the same by hand it will be noted that by reference to Fig. 5 that the head 17 is freely movable inthe tube 18 and it will be obvious that the hand movement will usually be less than the wind mill movement owing to the greater power deveoped by the wind mill. When, however, the wind mill is used to do the pumping,

motion will be between the full and dotted using the device for hand pumping it will be preferable to secure the lower end of the reach to an opening near the handle of the lever 28 than when the device is to be used for wind mill pumping since in the latter case greater movement of the lever 28 may be had.
It is to be noted that the delivery pipe 15 may be located so that the water flowing therethrough will be delivered directly to a tank while the pipe 18 may be led to the kitchen of the house or other suitable source of supply controlled by a faucet and by means of this construction the usual three-way Valve common in such plants-is eliminated.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction thereof without departing from the material principles thereof and it is therefore not wished to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.

In a device of the kind described, a wind mill tower, a pump rod reciprocable relative thereto, a tube supported from the lower end of said pump rod and having a centrally disposed opening in its lower end of less diameter than the remainder of the tube, a sucker rod extending through said opening and provided with an enlarged head to provide means for preventing the withdrawal of the rod from the tube, said 40 head being adapted for movement longitudinally of the tube independently thereof, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends to the tower and having one end secured to the sucker rod and the other end projecting outward from the tower, a hand lever pivoted to the tower at its lower end, and a reach connecting said levers.
