WILLIAM F. NORMAN, OF NEVADA, MISSOURI.
' METAL BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
1,052,617. Patented Feb. 11, 1913.
Application filed May 20, 1912 Serial No. 698,659.
8 which may be struck from the flange, the tongue, if desired, terminating in a pointed rong 9. VVhen the parts are positioned as shown in Fig. 2, the rug 10 is introduced between the arms, and the body portions 2 and 4 of the arms are closed together, whereupon the tongue 8 will be thrust through the rug 10, the tongue entering the opening 7 and ultimately becoming engaged between the flange and the body 2, as disclosed in Fig. 4, the body 2 constituting means for deflecting the tongue 8 laterally. The flanges 3 and 6 are disposed between the body portions 2 and 4 of the arms,'and in fashioning the flanges 3 and 6, the binder is rounded at its edges, as shown at 11, to prevent a cutting of the rug 1'0.
In Figs. 5 and 6, a modified form of the invention is shown. The strip 12 comprises connected arms, one arm comprising, as constituent elements, a body 14 and a flange 15 which may be equipped with a back-bent lip 16. The other arm of the binder comprises a s constituent elements, a body 17 and a flange 18. In some portion ofone arm, and referably in .the body portion 14 thereof t'ere' is fashioned an opening 19, the other arm being equipped with a tongue 20 which may be struck from the flange 18. The flange 18 lies between the body portions 14 and 17 of the arms, theflange 15 lying upon the outside of the body portion 14 of one arm. v
In practicaloperation, the rug 21 is inserted between the body portions 14 and 17 of the arms, and the body portions are crowded together, as shown in Fig. 5, so as to force the tongue 20 through the rug 21 and I through the opening 19 in the arm 14. The 90 flange 15 is then bent over upon the tongue 20, the tongue being bound between the flange 15 and the body 14, as shown in Fig. 6.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A binder of the class described comprising connected arms, each arm comprising as constituent elements, a body and a reversely curved flange, one of said constituent ele- 100 To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VVILLmu F. NORMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at -p Nevada city, in the county of Vernon and State of Missouri,
have inventeda new and 55 useful'Metal Binder, of which the following'is a specification.
The present invention aimsto provide a novel form of binder for the edges of carpets, rugs and the like, novel means being provided for holding the arms of the binder together, and for retaining the carpet, rug or other article between the arms. f
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the preciseembodiment of he invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what claimed without departing fromthe spirit of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows in perspective, a rug or the like, to the edge of binder constructed. in accordance with the present invention, has been ap-' plied; Fig. 2 isa perspective of thebinder, opened to receive the rug; Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the structure shown in Fig.
4 is a transverse section of the structure s own in Fig. .1; Fi 5 is a transverse section disclosing a mo ified form of the invention, the binder being partially applied to the rug; and Fi 6 is a transverse section of the structure s own in Fig. 5, the o eration of applying the binder having been completed.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, the binder is shown as fashioned from an arched strip the binder comprising connected arms. One arm of the binder comprises a body 2 and a reversely curved flange 3. The other arm of the binder comprises a body 4 and a reversely curved flange 6. In some portion of one arnrof the binder,'and preferably in the flange 3, there is fashioned an opening 7. Projecting from the other arm of the binder, and ordinarily from the flange 6, is a tongue ments of one arm being provided with an opening, there being a tongue projecting from the flange of the other arm and adapted to pass through the opening, and to be bound between the body and the flange of that arm which is provided with the openmg.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my slgnature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM F. NORMAN.
