Description

PA-TENTED JULY 12, 1870.
I; POWERS. HOD ELEVATOR.
0. vunmurno..wasmun1on n c Jesse POWERS, or oHroAGo, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENTVIN HOD-ELEVATORS;
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 106,246, dated July 12, 1 870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, Jessa Pownns, of Uni cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Hod- Elevator; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a vfull, clear, and exact description'thereof, which willenable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had'to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in whichrl igure lrepresents a side elevation of my improved bod-elevator. Fig. 2 is. a vertical" transverse section of the same;
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts' 1 V My invention relates to bod-elevators; and consists in an improvement thereon," to be specified hereinafter, whereby the hod is rendered detachable, works in a perpendicular line, and thus avoids an y dumping of the brick at either end of the elevator.
The invention consists chiefly in the arrange ment of an endless ladder, A, which is tit-ted around the shafts B and 0, of which oneis hung in a frame, D, that stands upon the ,1 ground, while the other is hung either'in the upper part of the'same frame I), or in a separate frame, which is placed into the upper part of the building. The endless ladder consists of two chains or belts, aa, which are connecte'd by rounds b b, at suitable distances i apart.- .The shaftB is, by suitable gear-wheels c c,- or otherwise, connected with a shaft, E, to which, by muscular or other power, rotarymotion is imparted. A pawl, d, catchinginto one of the gear-wheels, prevents the turning of the shafts in the wrong direction. Each v0t the beds F to be elevated has a hook,e, sev cured to one'end, whereby it can 'be suspended from around of the ladder. The shank f 0t each bod, by resting against a lower round,
holds the bod in the proper position, while the same is suspended from the ladder, The fullhods are carried to the ladder, and hooked onto the same. The motion imparted to the shaftB causes the ladder to revolve also, and to elevate the bed. Atthe proper height each hod is taken OE, and carried to the proper place. The empty hods can be hung to the descending side of the ladder to be lowered by the same. The hods .will thus be elevated by machinery, but need not be emptied until they arrive at the place of their destination.
- The gearing may be so arranged,-.b v suitable mechanism of well-known construction,
that the power may be varied in conformity withthe load to be elevated.
Having th us described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- v The endless traveling ladder a I), combined with a detachable hod, F, having book 0 and shank f attached thereto, as and for the purpose spccified; 1 JESSE POWERS.
