OTTO GZAB AN, OF NEW YORK,.N. Y.
' CATAMENIAL APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1913.
Application filed November 9, 1912. Serial No. 730,429.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, O'r'ro CZARAN, a sub.- ject ofthe King of Hungary, and resident of the city of New York, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Catamenial Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to cat'afnenial .appliances or bandages, and has for one of its objects to provide .a device of this character which is thoroughly eflicient in use, comfortable to the wearer and which may be readily adjusted to theperson of the wearer in such a manner as to obviate discomfort.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character with a catamenial' sack which isyieldingly or resiliently heldv against the vulva so as to pre-' vent chafing and uneasiness.
With these and other objects in view, which-will more fully appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the combination, arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawi' gs, it being understood that many changes may be made inthe size and proportion of the several parts and minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
One of the many possible embodiments of the invention is illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a catamenial appliance constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the sack forming part thereof;
2; Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 44 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a central vertical section taken through the frame of the appliance; and Fig. 6 is a plan view of said frame.
In the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates the supporting frame of the appliance, said frame being, preferably, made of a single piece of wlre, which is pliable or flexible so that it can be bent or shaped to correspond to the person of the wearer. The frame is substantially I-shaped, the shank 11 thereof being curved to conform to the perineal regions of the body, and the heads 12 and 13' being bent upward in such a manner that the two parts of the front head 12 are adapted to bear against the lower anterior abdominal wall of the wearer, while the two parts of the rear head 13 abut against the back part of the body. The shank 11 and so also the heads 12 and 13 are of substan tial width, as clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6, this being due to-the fact that the s'ubstantially parallel portions of the strand of wire are kept at a: distance from each other. The supportin'g'frame so made is covered with a non-absorbent and moisture-proof material 14. This covering is provided in 7 "elliptical shape, from which depends a fiexible sack 18, preferably made of rubber. The wire frame 17 is embedded inthe mouth portion of the sack, which latter tapers from its rear end 19 toward its front portion 20,
whichis straight, as clearly shown in Figs.
1 and 2 of the drawings. The sack is of a considerable depth and may contain, if found necessary, an absorbent material for the well known purpose. Upon the outer face of the sack is formed around its mouth 35 portion a depending flap 21 which prevents chafing and discomfort to the wearer. The sack projects a substantial distance above the supporting frame, its flexible and resilient material being attached in any mannor known in the art to the covering 14 of said frame. Due to this fact, the mouth portion of the sack is yieldingly supported, whereby discomfort to the vulvar section of the body is obviated. The wire frame 17 of the sack holds themouth portion thereof permanently in an open posit-ion, and the resiliency of the material of the sack tends to force the same continuously against the said vulvar portion so that the excretion will in all positions of the wearer enter the sack and be incorporated by the absorbent material therein.
To hold the structure upon the body, a
front strap 22 is secured at its end to the front part of the supporting frame and rear straps23 to the rear part thereof. The upper ends of these straps are provided with a plurality of slots 25, 25, which are adapted to be brought into engagement with studs upon a corset or hip form of female personal wear. Adjustment as to length of the straps is provided for, inasmuch as there are formed in the upper end of each strap a number of slots.
It should be observed that the supporting frame is adjustable to the body of the wearer. The distance between the head portions 12 and 13 upon each side of the frame corresponds to the thickness of a normal leg; such distance can be varied by bending the head portions away from or toward each other. A bending of the heads at an angle to the above ad ustment will bring the front heads 12 and the rear heads 13 in proper relation to the anterior ab doininal wall and back of the body user. v
\Vhat I claim is 1. In an appliance as described, a supporting frame made of a single piece of wire having a shank portion conforming to the perineal section of a human body and heads adapted to bear against the anterior abdominal wall and the back part thereof, respectively, a covering upon said frame of the provided with a slot in the shank portion of said frame, and a sack arranged in said slot having its yielding mouth portion projecting above the upper face of said cover-.
ing.
2. In an appliance as described, a sup porting frame made of a single piece of wire having a shank portion conforming to the perineal section of a human body and heads adapted tobear against. the anterior abdominal wall and the back part thereof,
- respectively, a covering upon said frame provided with a slot in the shank portion of said frame, a sack arranged in said slot ha'ving its yielding mouth portion projecting above the upper face of said covering, a rigid frame embedded in said mouth portion, and a resilient flap depending from said mouth port-ion at the outer face of said sack.
