Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 105,187, dated July 12, 187,0.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that we, WILLIAM- FRANZ, of Bncyrus, and WILLIAM Porn, of Crest'liue,
in the county-ot' Crawford and State ot' "Ohio,
have invented a new and Improved Knitting Machine; and we do hereby declare that the follqwing is a fall, clear, and exact description 4thereof,'reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of ref- `e1 enr e marked thereon.
Figure l is a vertical section. Fig. 2 isa section on the line :v of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of apart of the cams.
y Similar letters of reference denote like parts in each of the figures.
Our present 'invention relates to improvements upon the. knitting-machine patented February 1, 1870, in Letters Patent 'of the United States .No.9g,426;= 'andcofnsists ,in a novel construction of the cams which elevate the dneedles in working forward and backwar In the annexed drawings, A is the cylinder of the machine, formed with ashoulder, H, on which the needles rest, being maintained upon the same horizontal plane until theyI reach the points at C and B. D audrE are stationnry guides, lfastened to the cylinder and used in elevating the needles. lK andL- are sta-V tionary cams, lforined as showlnon which the bent ends of'the'needles are-carried when the 'needles are drawn down. J is an adjustable cam, secured to the cylinder by the set-screw ,F, which passesthrough lugs on the cylinder and also through a stud projecting from the cam J, and passingthrough 'a vertical s'lot in By turning the setscrew the These lat/ches are placed in slots' cnt in'the cams Land K, or in equivalent notches formed -to receive them. These latches oscillate upon their pivots, so as to stand either as shown in Fig. 1, vat B, so that their upper surface forms :m extension of the surface H, connecting it with the upper surface of the guides D or E, fr te stand vertically, as shown at 0, their pofjlits' extending slightly labove the surface ,of theshouldcr filhe operation of this machine is as follows:
Whenthe bent heels of the needles, passing along the surface H, in knitting from left to right or forward, encounter thelatch B, they will be thrown -up over the guide D until, striking the cam J, they will be drawn down by the latter below its lower point, where, encountering the face of cam L, they will be forced up, passingl between the lguide E and the cam L and over the p oint of the latch G to the horizontal surface of the shoulder H.
- I f the v'machine is reversed,A to knit fromv right to left, the heel of the advance needle,
traversin'g'the shoulder H, when it encounf ters the. projecting point of the latch G, will ycause it to swing on its pivot until 'its point is brought against'the guide E, over which it and the rest of the needles will be carried to thevcam J which willzforce them down below `its point, when' they will be elevated by the cam K. The first needle, passing upward on thecam K, willA canse the latch B to swing l into the vertical position shown in the drawings for latch U, and thus, the latches operat- .ing auoxnatically, the machine may be used f to knit forward and backward.
We are aware` ot' the patent granted to 'Dana Bickford on the 6th day of July, I ,tlliill We conv Sider our machine an improvement on his. n Our latches are diierently constructed and arranged with reference to the other parts of l Y landclaim nothing therein shown.
the cylinder, and we dispense with spiings used by Bickford. l
Having thus described our invention, wha we claim, and desire to secure lby Letters 'Pat' ent ofthe United States, isi u1. Ther'combifnation, with thel cylinder A,
" provided with the shoulder H,vof the' stationary guides 1) and E and pivoted latches B 'and C, 'substantially as described.
2. The combination of the cam J, stationary cams' K and L, automatic latches B and U,
and stationary guides D'and E, substantially asv shown and described.
- In testimony whereof we hereunto ubscribe our names in the presence of two su scribing witnesses thijs-5th day of May, 1870.
