WILLIAM CRONK, OF MONTOUR FALLS, YORK.
COMBINATION WEEDING-HOE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1913.
Application filed. September 15, 1910. Serial No. 582,125.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WVILLIAM CRoNK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montour Falls, in the county of Schuyler and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Combination eeding-Hoe, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hoes adapted for weeding purposes consisting of a hoeing blade and a pair of grubbing prongs projecting in opposite directions from the end of a handle; and my object is to provide a strong and durable tool of this nature wherein the blade will be formed from sheet steel and the prongs from bar steel fastened to the blade in a manner to stiffen and strengthen said blade, where attached to the handle, thus rendering the blade more serviceable, as well as providing prongs which will stand the severest usage.
I attain my object by constructing the hoe in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 presents the hoe in elevation looking at it from the rear, the handle being cross-sectioned at a point adjacent the blade; and Fig. 2, a vertical section through the center of the hoe.
Like numerals designate like parts in the two views.
In constructing my improved hoe, I cut the blade 1 from sheet steel and fasten it to the end of the handle 2 by means, preferably, of a two part metal tang such as described in U. S. Letters Patent, granted to me, 972,753, dated Oct. 11, 1910, said tang consisting of the two pieces of bar steel 3 and 4 driven into a bore in the end of the handle and bent over at their outward ends at 5 and 6 against the outward side of the blade 1, to which they are riveted, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The prongs are forged from bar steel, round or otherwise, cut to the desired length and flattened at each end to form spear shaped heads 7, the bar being bent around at the center and flattened at 8 to lie against the rearward face of the blade 1, the bend 8 passing around the point of attachment to the handle and being fastened to the blade by means of the rivet 9, by which the tang part 6 is fastened to said blade, and at each side of the handle by the rivets 10.
By this construction I not only attain a strong and durable construction for the prongs, but, as will be evident from inspection of the drawings, I also provide a stiffening brace for the blade 1 around its point of attachn'icnt to the handle.
Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a hoeing blade and a handle provided with a bore at one end, of a prong member having a part in contact with one side of said blade, a tang consisting of two separate parts, corresponding portions of said parts being passed through the blade and driven into said bore and the remaining port-ions being bent over at right angles in opposite directions, one of said bent over portions being secured to the blade and the prong member.
2. A combination weeding hoe, comprising a sheet metal hoeing blade, means for attaching the blade to the end of a handle, and a pair of prongs forged from a bar of metal, said bar being flattened at the ends into the form of spear shaped points and bent around and flattened at the center, said flattened central portion being passed around the point of attachment of the blade to the handle and riveted to the blade attaching means and blade.
3. In a weeding hoe, in combination a metal hoeing blade, means for attaching the blade to the end of a handle, a pair of prongs formed from a bar of metal, said bar being pointed at the ends and flattened at the center and bent into substantially a U-shape, the flattened central portion being passed around the point of attachment of the blade to the handle and secured to the blade at taching means and blade.
4. The combination with a hoeing blade and a handle provided with a bore at one end, of a prong member having a part in contact with one side of said blade, a tang comprising a portion adapted to be passed through the blade and driven into the bore, and a portion bent over at right angles on the outer side of the blade and secured to said blade and prong member.
In testimony whereof I have aiiixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
WVILLIAM CRONK.
