Be it known that we, Hunnnr M. Gnnrsr, a citizen of the United States, and EMAN UEL J. BOYLER, a citizen of Canada, and both residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Attachment-l-Iolders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to a sewing machine attachment holder comprising a foot portion adapted to be secured to the presser bar of a sewing machine, and having a laterally extending arm which is frictionally embraced by a portion of a support on which the attachment proper may be either permanently or detachably mounted. If the attachment proper be detachably mounted on said support difierent interchangeable attachments may be used in connection with a single support; or if the attachment proper be permanently secured to said support the latter may be removed'and then be replaced by a similar interchangeable support having a different attachment proper. The fact that the attachment support is frictionally engaged with the laterally extending arm of the presser foo-t portion of the device enables the support to be adjusted laterally for the purpose of locating the attachments in different working positions relative to the needle of a sewing machine, and also enables the attachments which are permanently fixed to their supports to be readily and quickly removed and replaced without loosening or tightening set screws.

In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved holder having a wide hemmer remo-vably mounted on the attachment support. Figs. 2 and 3 are opposite side views of the same. Fig. l is a plan view of the same, showing the three parts thereof separated from each other. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail section on line 55, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a plan view, similar to Fig. 1, but showing a narrower hemmer which is permanently secured to its support.

Referring to the drawing, 1.2 denotes a presser-foot portion provided with a shank 13 by which it may be secured to the presserbar of a sewing machine, and with a later ally extending arm 14, said arm being above Specification of Letters Patent.

the plane of the bottom of said foot portion. The arm 14 is frict-ionally engaged by what may be termed a socket portion 15 of a forwardly extending support 16 on which the attachn'ient proper 17 is mounted in front of the said presser foot portion 12. To-this end the said socket portion 15 is preferably formed with downwardly eX- tending flanges 18, embracing the sides of said arm 14, and having, beneath the said arm 14, inturned lugs 19. Also the upper part of said socket portion 15 is provided with an integral or struck-out spring tongue 20, the free end of which is bent downward slightly so as to press against the upper surface of the arm 14-, and thus, in cooperation with the inturned lugs 19, serves to frictionally but securely retain the attachment support in working position, while permitting a ready lateral adjustment of said support, if desired; and also permitting the said support to be conveniently placed in position or removed if it be desired to replace the support by a similar interchangeable support on which a different kind of an attachment proper may be mounted.

If it be desired to removably mount the attachment proper on its support the latter will preferably be provided with a holding part or plate 21, riveted or otherwise per manently secured to the support 16, and having at its sides rearwardly converging lips 22 adapted to embrace the sides of the base portion of the attachment proper 17, and which sides are also slightly rearwardly converging so that they will have a wedging fit between the said rearwardly converging lips 22. By virtue of this construction of the rearwardly converging lips 22 of the holding plate or part 21 the passage of the work through the attachment will have a tendency, owing to its frictional drag, to tighten the attachment proper in place; while it is obvious that it may be quickly removed when it is desired to substitute a different form of attachment proper therefor, by moving it forward, or toward the operator, thus loosening the wedging grasp of the spring lips 22.

Instead of detachably mounting the attachment proper on the support 16 said attachment proper may be permanently secured to said holder, as in the form of the invention shown in Fig. 6, as by riveting the said attachment proper to the said sup- Lilla port. This construction will necessitate the binder. braider or corder, is to be applied to the holder.

From the foregoing it will be understood that the invention provides a convenient formof attachment holder with which different forms of attachments, as difierent widths of hemmers, orbraiders or corders may be readily used in connection with the holder; the construction of the parts being such that one form of attachment may be quickly and conveniently substituted for another form when occasion demands; and the construction also being such that while the attachments will be securely held in working positions they may be readily adjusted laterally relative to the needle of the sewing machine (the position of the needle being indicated by the opening 23 in the presserfoot) when desired. To facilitate adjustment or removal of the attachment support the socket portion 15 thereof is preferably provided at its end with an upturned lug 24L to be grasped by the thumb and finger of the attendant.

Having thus described our invention we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A sewing machine attachment holder consisting of a foot portion adapted to be secured to a sewing machine presser-bar and provided with a laterally extending arm which is above the plane of the bottom of said foot portion, combined with a support extending forward from said arm and having a part comprising yielding means engaging said arm, and thus serving to retain said support in place frictionally, and an attachment proper mounted on said support forward of said foot portion.

A sewing machine attachment holder consisting of a foot portion adapted to be secured to a sewing machine presser-bar and provided with a laterally extending arm which is above the plane of the bottom of said foot portion, combined with a support extending forward from said arm and having a part comprising yielding means frictionally engaging the said arm, and an attachment proper detachably mounted on said support forward of said foo-t portion, said support having rearwardly converging lips serving to hold said attachment proper in place. 7 r

A sewing machine attachment holder consisting of a foot portion adapted to be secured to a sewing machine presser-bar and provided with a laterally extending arm which is above the plane of the bottom of said foot portion, combined with a support extending forward from said arm and having a part frictionally engaging the latter, said frictionally engaging part comprising in-turned lugs beneath and a struck-out or integral spring tongue above, and an attachment proper mounted on said support forward of said foot portion.
