SHAKE-BALL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1913.
Application filed June 5, 1912. Serial No. 701,733.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I,NELs J ENsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shake-Balls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved shake ball for use in playing of billiards, pool, and other games; and to such ends, the invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
Hitherto, it has been customary to number socalled shake balls, but the numbers have been placed on the round surface thereof, so that the balls when shaken upon a table would roll and the number of the ball dealt to any particular player, would be made visible to all of the players. In the playing of many games, this is undesirable. For instance, in what is known as One hundred or bust, each player obtains a numbered ball and the number of the ball which he secures determines certain amount that he must make or run up during the game in order to win. In such a game, it is very undesirable that any of the players know the number of any ball except that of their own ball. My invention makes this desired result easily accomplished, and the invention consists in providing the ball at one point with a flattened surface into which is inserted a weight having a number of the ball marked thereon, or impressed therein. With this improved shaker ball, when the balls are thrown onto a table, the flat numbered surface is immediately thrown against the table and the number is covered so that it cannot be seen.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the improved shake ball; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line a m on Fig. 2.
The numeral 1 indicates the body of the ball, which may be of wood or any suitable material and is round except that it is flattened at one point and provided with an inset metal plug or weight 2, the exposed face of which is flat and is marked with the number of the ball which is preferably cast therein. As a simple and cheap way of fastening the plug or weight 2 in its side within the ball, a screw 3 is screwed into the center of the ball with its head projecting into the seat provided for the plug 2, and the said plug 2 is then preferably cast in the said seat and around the head of the said screw. The plug 2 is preferably cast from babbitt, or other suitable material. The screw alfords a detent for securely anchoring the plug in the body of the ball.
What I claim is:
l. A shake ball having a flattened surface and a marked or numbered weight embedded in the body of the said ball with its fiat surface co-incident with the flat surface of the said ball.
2. A shake ball comprising a spherical body having a single flattened surface, and a weight in the form of a plug of heavier material than the body of the said ball, set into the body of the said ball and having an exposed fiat face co-incidentwith the flat surface of said body, the exposed face of the said plug being marked with a number or identifying character.
3. A shake ball comprising a spherical body having a single flattened surface and a plug seat co-incident with said flattened surface, a screw inserted into the body of the ball with its head exposed in said seat, and a metallic weight cast into the said seat and having an exposed flat surface marked with the number or identifying character.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
